2003 Land Rover Disvovery overheating

My 2003 LR Discovery (approx 125k miles) has maintained slow coolant leak for the last week. I haven't had a chance to take it into the shop, so I've been toting coolant in the car and topping it off whenever needed- it normally lasts a week or so. Leaving my office tonight however, the car overheated (all the way into the red) and wouldnt hold a drop of coolant- instead it all came streaming out on the pavement! Fortunately there's an auto shop directly across the street, so I will be taking it over tomorrow (left car in parking lot overnight). Two questions: can I crank it in the morning and drive across the street to service shop, or should I have it towed across? Second, any suggestions about what this could indicate? I would greatly appreciate any help! Thank you!!

Have it towed to be safe
may be a simple blown hose or cracked radiator tank but to drive it will result in a damaged motor

I just expiriance the same problems on my rover so i check it out and found that the engine spark fuse was out. I replaced the said fuse and their you go it started. You can find that fuse under the dashboard in the satellite 1 fuse box. it should be the 3rd one from the right. Good luck buddy hope that helps you out.

Observe the engine running in the dark to see if there are any spark jumps from the wires or coil, you may have a carbon track.....

SOURCE: transfer case oil change- 1999 Land Rover Discovery II

No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.

SOURCE: 1997 land rover discovery idles

Hi, this is almost always caused by the Idle Control Valve (IAC), which is located near the firewall, on the passenger side, next to the throttle body. They sell for about $50. On generation 1 cars (1993 to 1997) these are very difficult to remove and install, but it can be done-or you could try to 'SEAFOAM" the intake by running a bottle in the gas tank and taking another bottle and run it through the intake by disconnecting the PVC hose while the engine is running, push the hose (it will **** the Seafoam into the intake) and then let it sit for about 10 minutes. Two bottles will run you about $14. When you start it up, expect alot of smoke-it might even bring the volunteer fire company, but it is the carbon build up being cleaned out of the engine. The engine should be fully warmed up before you do this. After you do this, disconnect the positive battery cable for about 10 minutes-it allows the computer (ECU) to 'relearn' inputs from the various sensors like the IAC. I actually did this on two Generation One marks I have owned, and in both cases, it cured the problem. The high idle in drive and park is tough on the engine and murder (in drive) on the already fragile transmission, not to mention the brutal effect it has on U-joints when you shift into drive at high RPM's, so you want to get it fixed as soon as possible or park it until you can solve it.

2000 Land Rover Discovery 2. I cannot find a leak detection pump but get a P1451 and P1481 code. Could this be the solenoid for the charcoal canister vent in the engine bay giving me the issues?.

Question edited for clarity.

My late mother worked at the Land Rover plant in Solihull and put careful miles on a Disco when it was known as the 'J Car'. Also the first Vogue with a turbo. Long time ago!

Information and videos on both codes.

Leaking coolant not overheating 2003

You are not filling it above the "full" mark, right ?
It has to have some space in the tank to allow hot coolant to expand.

Land rover disco overheated(coolant hose broke on long trip) starts but knocks and has fluid leaking from top of radiator on battery side.

I can't say without looking at it, but probably yes.
If the engine had enough force in the cooling system to blow the hose, and the engine knocks, and it quits running its probably toast.
You would need to run a compression test to check the cylinders and run the engine with the radiator cap off to see how long it would take to get hot again, and to check for exhaust fumes in the cooling system.

Just ad oil change and now having oil leaks. If i need to have gaskets changed what is the standard price. 2003 Land Rover Discovery 109k miles.

Check the teflon gasket on oil plug and make sure filter is not leaking, take back to where you had oil changed if possible, a sudden leak is usually a cheap fix. Price can vary alot on your gaskets, depending on how hard it is to get to and wich ones need replaced if any, really with that many miles you should still be ok up to 150,000. Good Luck!

I have bought a 99 land rover discovery and it is overheating

From practical experiences of heavy trucks, this problem is created by poor coolant flow thro' the Radiator Core. Flush cleaning the Rad. or decontaminating the exterior air flowways will not cure the problem. My recommendation is a Recore or after market replacement.

Just changed all the hoses & thermostat on my 2000 land rover (over 100k) discovery last week. Now noticed antifreeze leaking under water pump- suspect it's going bad, am I correct?

yes. there is a small weep hole in the snout of the water pump. if you see the coolant coming from there, it's time to replace it. coolant could also be leaking out of the front cover seal. but that would be lower than the water pump. check it well.

2004 Discovery. Small coolant leak from a ''small can'' shaped valve on right side of engine block, between coolant reservoir and engine. It has a TEE at the bottom of the valve into two ports on...

Yes this sounds like the throttle body warmer thing-- on a LR that isn't in a cold climate you can just bypass it. I did on my DII in california.

#4 Cylinder (sleeve dropped) continued...

We have a 04 discovery with the same problem except it is cylinder #3. It has 62,000 perfectly maintained miles on it. There are three other 04's in service for the same problem. It is a defective motor and you shouldn't have to pay for their inability to make a motor that last's less than 100,000 miles or much more!
