I have a 2000 yukon xl that has a horrible rattle coming from my rear end almost all of the time. It seems to go away at high speeds but has devoped a humming sound or a vibration then. Also every time i put it in to forward or reverse it makes this clunk sound. It has done this for some time but has gotten worse with the rattle sounds it now making. Any suggestions

I sounds like you need to grease the intermediate shaft. GM sells a kit that consists of a plug and a bag of grease for around $18. It has been a few years since I bought it so the price could have went up. They also offer an update shaft for around $100. I am nearly 100% sure this is your problem. I have a 03 Yukon and have done it 3 times in 120,000 miles.
There are a few other posibilities, but they are not so cheap. The next logical problem could be the power steering pump or the valve in the gear box.

If you have that much play back there, first check rear universal . If play is present in pinion with shaft removed, you will not be happy with what you find inside the cover.1/2 turn of lash in any gearset is far beyond the scope of any adjustment. Rebuilding is an exact science and must be done with special tools and lots of experience.
With any luck the u joint is bad...
