Engine simply shut-down in the middle of the highway drive, later on I was told by the mechanic, which is a top certified toyota mechanic that the engine was damaged so badly that it has to be replaced!
I drive 2007 Land cruiser with only 120,000 kilometer, service the care regularly ++ every 7000 km in average and keep the car in a top-notch condition always.
I have a feeling that such massive engine fault has to do with basic design of the engine that lead to oil and heat problems that would not show on the car regular indicators until its to-late .
any ideas?

NO, a cat only cleans up pollutants. It has no effect on engine performance unless you have a misfire and the cat works overtime and melts and cloggs the exhaust system. If your blowing grey smoke out the tailpipe then you indeed may have a bad engine. What I would want to know from the mechanic is what is the compression and why he thinks its a lower engine issue rather than a leaking valve on the head which would be alot less expensive to repair. Then again you could get a second opinion from another shop. Mechanic shops are known for gouging customers wallets, Not that i'm implying anything here.
Had exact same problem after driving 120 miles in Florida heat. After 30 minutes started but ran rough for a day and now seem fine. Thought at first fuel filter or dirty gas. Going to replace filter anyway. Is this a common problem?
Take off the black plastic that covers the fuel pump.(It is atached to the engine on the left side). There is a grey conector that hooks to the return valve of the pump. It gets hot and looses contact, stoping the engine. There is a factory recall to replace that conector. You can fix it for the moment by umpluging it and twisting a litle the pins with a needle plyer.
