Temperature gauge was fluctuating up and down, but never ran to the red. By the time I made it home it was normal again...noticed that the fans did come on...but they started again. We changed the thermastat today and took it for a drive and noticed steam when we came back also that the fans were not on.

Sounds like the heater core is leaking, at least the smell, the other is either the cooling system has air trapped in it from a head gasket leak, or the sensor that turns on the light is defective, is the coolant clean? It will be one of 3 colors, red, green or yellow, rusty looking is very bad.

Check to see if your electric radiator fan is turning on. These cars are known for the temperature switch that turns on the fan to go bad. Also, a highly overlooked problem, make sure the fins on your radiator and condenser aren't blocked with debris. Shine a flashlight on the opposite side and look through. Good luck!

when engine is cold remove radiator cap and check coolant level, sounds like it is really low and has an air pocket in it.
