2000 Eclipse GT auto trans. Car stalls at stop lights. will run fine in all gears. R, N,. When gas is aplied car will run fine untill it shifts to first and the rpm goes to idle. The car will jump between 0 and 2500 rpm a couple of times then stall. I have no warning lights showing.

gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?

and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?

my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)

my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)

my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.

Have the car towed to a local transmission repair shop, they can give you a preliminary diagnosis in most case at no charge

indicates a problem in the spigot bush in the crank shaft
it is dry and when it heats up , it is seizing on the input shaft(clutch shaft) of the transmission
up shifting is fairly easy as the hear synchro's do the job along with correct engine rpm
down shift overloads the synchro action unless you increase the rpm to match the ration to road speed

Not shifting into gear or out of first gear? Engine races like neutral until trans engages? Need a better description of issue.

Sounds like the filter might be plugging up. I would have it serviced. Do you have a check engine light on? How long do you have to leave the engine off before it will start moving again?

I would change the trans flter, trans fluid, and have the linkage on the trans adjusted.

sound like modulator is dead. check on the side of
trans. for broken wire or vacuum hose undone

probably the vehcile speed sensor
