Dorve car about 20 miles (hi-way) stoped at light and died, Would start and remain runing in park, but when put in drive it would die. Was able to get car home, lifted the hood and could smell strong coolant but not leaking on engine or concrete. once cooled down completely runs fine even when in drive. have not used car sense, dont want to take a chance. any ideas anyone?
Right check coolant level then start engine and check the fuel pressure on the injector rail and it should be 55lbs ,then when this is done post a reply and remember to get the spelling right ,now hood ? thats the bonnet and the trunk? thats the boot ,tire is spelt tyre and color is spelt colour ,pronounciation lesson follows later .Remember that if the fuel pressure is low the engine can run weak this will cause it to overheat in extreme cases.

When an engine is overheating and then the temp drops on the guage, it's usually a sign that the coolant is not touching the temp sensor. There's no coolant in the engine. Putting water in the overflow tank won't solve this. Take the radiator cap off after the engine cools and put coolant in the radiator. you might have to crank the engine and do this several times, as the engine can develop air pockets that won't allow the coolant to travel inside the engine. If you don't see any leaks, and it still uses coolant, you've probably got a blown head gasket. Check for water on the plugs, check cylinder compression. If it slowly uses coolant, try putting a large box of pepper in the radiator or some of that radiator seal copper flakes.

Well I had the same problem and wow was I surprised man. I have a code machine that plugs into my car and tells me what wrong with it then I fix it. It read that I had a misfire #1 so that means my spark plug is dirty or something like that. When I took off the spark plug it was smashed in that was a good sign.. I called a mechanic friend of mine and he said that my head and piston were damaged but would not really know unless he took it apart. What he said was true and cost me a great deal of money..!!!! Now searching the web I have found that there many jeep liberty with the same problem just different spark plug locations so I wonder if Jeep knows of this issue but will not acknowledge it.. If you need more information please email me at [email protected]

take it to an auto zone or advanced tell then you want a code check they usely do it for free the use a code machine that hooks to th PIN harness under the dash they can read the code and tell you what the sensiors are saying about the engine and other related systems

sounds like the crank angle sensor. my 1993 buick was doing the same thing. hope this helps.
