have the front suspension and steering checked out by an accredited specialist to check for loose /worn components. This is a dangerous situation and requires immediate inspection.
I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.
Before I post this for you, I just wanted to let you know that you can buy an aftermarket harness that plugs right into your existing harness. Then it allows you to hook up to the wires without cutting your factory wires. They might even have it at Wal-Mart for less than $15. Anyway here are the specs. Save your self the hassle and expence of troubleshooting and replacement parts, install a suspension retrofit kit which changes the rear bags to coil springs and the front to struts. A car this old you might as well start over for less than $500.00......
Is it a self-leveling suspension? If so, then most likely one of the sensors at th front has failed or at least has become dirty or contaminated, and will need cleaning or replacement.
