SOURCE: 01 Ford Expedition. Check Engine light and failed Smog check.

whoever installed the egr valve, if it wasnt you, just cleared the engine codes, thus giving you this problem once again. Get it scanned at autozone, and go from there.

SOURCE: 1981 ford bronco failed emissions twice

Look behind the motor, next to the firewall. There's a vacuum check valve that keeps the air gulp pump from pressurizing the crankcase. Mine was shot; had the same symtoms. Also, make sure that the EGR valve is closing at low idle.

You don't need an engine light to check the codes. First, do a KOEO (key on, engine off), but, let me tell you, when this happened to me (1986 Full size with 302 EFI, multiport injection) NOTHING showed up. No one, not Ford, not emission specialists, nada, knew the vacuum check valve existed.

By the way; are you getting motor oil in the air filter housing?

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Ford Explorer. Check engine light

Here is a list of possible causes, hope this helps.

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on.

Possible Causes onepx.gif Setting Conditions onepx.gif onepx.gif onepx.gif onepx.gif

  • Air leaks after the MAF sensor, or leaks in the PCV system
  • Vehicle running out of fuel or engine oil dip stick not seated
  • EGR valve gasket is damaged or leaking around the gasket
  • Exhaust leaks before or near where the HO2S is mounted
  • Fuel injector(s) not supplying enough fuel
  • Fuel system not supplying enough fuel during high fuel demand conditions (e.g., the fuel pump may not supply enough fuel)
  • MAF sensor is dirty (can cause PCM to underestimate airflow)
  • Intake gasket leak

I have a 2011 Jetta TDI that fails CA smog test. The car is a 6 speed with only 37k miles. The.Smog shop said I needed to run a "drive cycle" on the car. What exactly IS that?

There are several monitors in your computer and whenever the computer is reset to turn off the check engine light, the monitors have to run a full cycle to show that they are good. Even though your check engine light might not be lit, the state will not pass emissions unless all drive cycles have been cleared. If you reset the check engine light, you might as well fix the error that caused it to light or you will not be able to pass the emission test. If there isn't an issue, you should be able to just drive for a couple of days for the cycles to complete.

Will an engine bought from a 1999 Silverado originally sold outside of California pass California emissions

There are two type of emission classes.

Federal and California emissions.

Look under the hood for the emission class sticker.
Smog check station's machine in CA are programmed to handle both types.

You do not need to change anything before the inspection.

==== Side notes: You should check the service record for the last Catalytic converter,O2 sensors and EGR valve change.
Service interval for
Catalytic ~180,000 miles O2 ~150,000 miles EGR ~160,000 miles

If you can locate the last smog test (even from out of state) Check for the
CO NOx

Keeps failing emission check engine light not on

As you probably know by now there is no way to pass an emissions test as long as the check engine light is on....Your car is what they call an OBD2 system... You need to have the diagnostics codes pulled by a special tester specifically for OBD 2 systems... Once codes are pulled fix if necessary any problem and have the codes cleared... This will turn the check engine light off an enable you to pass smog providing your car is running properly...

My 1999 Chevy Prizm has the check engine light on - although I have had no mechanical problems with the care, it drives fine. I have lubed it, and gotten gas recently, but light still stays on.

Your check engine light is an emissions warning. Your vehicle will not pass smog with the engine light on. You can go to kragen or other auto parts stores and buy a GM code reader for it. Though it runs fine, its telling you that a sensor or something is bad.
