u check the fluid by taking off the fill bolt and putting your finger in if u can touch fluid ur good if not u should add some. u can buy a tube from a parts store. it screws onto the top of the bottle and u let it go in.

Might be really simple - but EXPENSIVE! I had a similar fault - apparently the first planet set breaks up. Cure - a new box. Price - crippling!
Don't be tempted to skimp on the box. Get a rebuild from a reputable supplier. A s/h box will set you back around £5-600 in UK where a rebuilt (guaranteed) will be more like £1800. The thing with the cheap box is it costs about the same to fit but you don't know how good it is till it's too late! Then you're still shopping for another but you're £600 lighter!
Also, you could be buying other faults. If the speed sensor has had a problem - the box will change badly (snatching) and that will be another £250 where the expensive box will have ahad one fitted!

dose the car have a o/d button
if so it sounds like the end clutch has died in the auto and you will need to go to a auto specialist.
check you auto oil level first and go from there

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem
SOURCE: turn on the overdrive switch gear disengage
the problem is caused by the "end clutch" this is the 4th gear or over drive gear of the auto trans, it is mounted in an alloy cover on the chassis rail side of the trans, will requre removal of this cover and new clutch packs fitted, until then just drive the car with OD off, any trans shop can replace this for ya, fairly easy,
