You have to remove the air intake filter and then kind of reach around up in there to change it. It can be done, but is a lot of work. On the duramax, it is even harder to do the driver side because of the dual batteries. You have to remove the battery, then the battery seat plate, and undo the winshield washer fluid tank and lean it forward. Then you can just sort of reach in and change both headlights. A very big pain to change a couple of headlights, but if you want HID's.... for the average person, changing a headlight now means a trip to that garage.
Just went through this on a 2007 Duramax 2500 hd. After 2 hours of sussing GMC I figured it out. On the drivers side remove two screws in the light assembly (one in the plastic strap that holds the light assembly to the core support and at about 11 o'clock) this will allow you to pull the lights about 1-2" forward giving more hand room. Twist the socket up to unlatch and feed it up above the housing. Unclip the old light from the plug, now here is the trick-- do not plug the new light in yet, take the new light and insert it into the housing with the plu end pointing almost straight up ( close to 11 o'clock) twist it a quarter turn down till it locks, now plug the socket back in it and replace the two screws and you are done. It seems GMC did not allow enough wire for the socket to be twisted up that far---go figure. Hope this helps
This loyal GMC customer is switching to FORD next purchase. Replacing a headlight bulb is as basic as checking the engine oil.
GMC really screwed up simple and lost a customer...and by the way, I had to take it to the dealer $120...
I have a 08 2500 w duramax inslaling plow lighting harness i was able to remove cover between the grill and radiator, pop out little plastic exspantion centers w screwdriver. It wasnt easy but i was able to r&r bulbs & plug in conections.Havent figured out how to get to turns &runs yet without r&r of bat & airbox.what pain in the ***. my 04 was a 10 minute job.
I decided to skip what the instuctions said and got myself a long needle nose pliers to grabe the connector, and a small needle tip flat head to pop the clip. it takes good hand control...good luck

I have an '07 3500HD with the 6.6 Duramax and my driver's side low beam went out AGAIN. I think its because the Seirra/Silerados come equipped with auto turn on headlights when the truck is started. I know it puts a lot of wear and tear on the bulbs, hence the 2nd change out. After taking out the plastic cover there are the 2 bolts (11mm) hold the top of the housing to the front. But there is also a screw under the housing which will need to be taken out and the housing will come right out. Not wayyyy out mind you,,,but enough to change out the bulb.
I feel for ObamaMotors and he'll be buying a Ford next time. But pal, you'll be sorry. There is nothing better than the Duramax strapped on to an Allison. But good luck and Aloha
Two comments: Sunnyvale's solution was how I changed the bulb on a 2007 Sierra. The dealer I have noticed does solution 2, ie removes the cover between the grill and radiator. Both require great effort. Another engineering marvel!

Thanks for answer
I have the same problem with a burned out bulb on my 2008 duramax 2500HD. Drivers side looks like it screws in with two screws then connects with a clip from behind. Do you really have to take the battery and washer bottle out for a bulb?
