Find the big hose that comes out of the top of the radiator and follow it to the engine and that is where the thermostat is located. My advice is to be sure to get a factory thermostat and rubber gasket as it makes installation much easier. I have done it both ways and the factory one is easier to install.

free the engine from the compressor and then remove the plug then first insert the drive belt on the smaller pulley side and after that try inserting the belt on the larger pulley side slowly by rotating the pulley slowly by stretching the belt with a rope

SOURCE: Hi, I have a 2001 nissan

hi. was just looking at your problem of (sentra) overheating and actually, i am a mechanic for nissan and have changed many head gaskets for this particular vehicle equipped with 1.8 liter motor and found that they are notorious for this problem of faulty head gasket's.Unless you did't properly bleed the system, which i doubt because you seem mechanically inclined since you already changed every other part of the system,i would't doubt that this is the problem.Anyway, by the time you read this, you have probably already found this out..Just thought i would let you know this info.Good luck!...by the way,if you haven't already changed you cam and crank sensors,do that too, before you get stuck and get the part's at the dealer!!!!-they are redesigned from the old one's!!just some advise to try to help you out!!! I have a 2001 nissan sentra 1.8 with 158,000 miles. Problem started a month ago,no heat while idling but when revved up or driving would have heat. Changed thermostat, bled system from bolt above thermostat...

unfortunately these engines are known for this condition and for head gasket failure.with engine cold pressurize cooling system with spark plugs removed.look down into holes with flashlight after about ten minutes.....im betting youll see a puddle of coolant on piston...usually its cyl# 2 or 3.i cant think of any other possibility for system repeatedly airlocking other than a head gasket.good news they are probably one of the easier ones to replace.

Thermostat

It should be located where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine, and there you should find the thermostat housing. Be sure when installing the new thermostat that the spring side of the thermostat is installed towards the engine.

After you change the thermostat you might have to remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator to pour coolant back into the block, or the engine might not have any coolant getting into it until after the thermostat has opened up, and by then it would be too late and the engine will over-heat. Also, be sure to bleed the trapped air from the cooling system by using any bleeders in the cooling system.

No heat

My 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8s with 55,000 mi. blows cold air from the heater. Coolant not circulating in engine. Lower hose stays cool to touch. Both heater hoses cold. Changed thermostat - didn't fix it. Coolant not leaking or dirty. None in oil - no oil in radiator. Changed worn water pump belt - pump spins freely with no noise or resistance. Cooling fans come on after warm-up. Temperature gauge stays in normal range then jumps to hot and back again. Coolant good to 10 below - didn't freeze here yet. No other problems or repairs to car. Afraid to drive and make worse. Help!
