My 2005 Vue does the same thing. It happens a few seconds after I start it and some times before it's in gear. It starts to knock about 10 to 30 seconds after I start the engine and lasts only a second or two. Always 2 or 3 knocks, no more, from under the vehicle. Even before I step on the brakes or shift the trans, if sitting at idle.
Oil has been changed regular and I check the level weekly.

I have the same issue and I took it to the dealer... the knock is in the rear and it is 3 times within minutes of me starting the car. The knock sensor measures vibration in the engine such as a spark knock, and sends data to the computer to turn back the spark timing. The sensor does not know where the vibration is coming from.
could be wheel bearing.. could be rotor or brakes..replace them all.. do it yourself save a grand. under 3 hours work.. even if 4 hours thats a big savings.
a clack clack or tick tick sound is the lifters. A deeper thumping is a rod knock or piston slap. You need to take it to a mechanic for an opinion. Sadly it sounds serious. You can use a rod or a hose to pin-piont the area of the noise.
noise is caused by lack of oil to lifters, or worn timeing chain. if noise is from lifters it should go away wit proper oil level, if still there needs timeing chain.
try having someone kill the a/c while you check for the noise. if it stops then check further into the compressor where you said you thought it was coming from. It could be the bearings in the compressor clutch going out.

Same problem here. Would like to resolve the issue, knocking is driving me crazy.
