I have a 1988 BMW 735i 6-cyl (automatic) that ran out of gas yesterday. I had it towed, added gas, and it won't start. It is NOT getting fuel in order to fire. I have drained the battery TWICE trying, so I'm guessing it's the fuel pump. Is the fuel pump on this model INSIDE the gas tank, or not?...Because I've gotten BOTH answers for this car.
Remove your trunk mat and spare tyre. You can access fuel pump through plate in the trunk. Don't need to drop tank. Check fuses and relays first.

If you ran the car out of gas, there is a very good chance that the fuel pump is dead. Gas is coolant for for the pump like anifreeze is for the engine. The pump has now been overheated and will need to be replaced. You must drop the tank to do this and I hope you did not fill the tank. It is a very good idea to never run your fuel tank below 1/4 because you stress the pump if you do.

This sounds very similar to a problem I had...after replacing the fuel pump, I still had the same problem. Turns out, there's a switch at the bottom of the steering collum that was messed up. It was about $300 to get fixed, but worth every penny!!

Try your camshaft possition sensor. If it is the same as my problem I just had to replace that and it started right up. Oh and mine was built into the distributer assembly. Take off cap and pin it's the plastic thing at the bottom. Should just pop out and you have to go to the dealer to get the part. Hopefully this helps!

Headgasket must be checked. and check that you have enough radiator fluid. Also check for warped/cracked cylinder head.
