The fault could be almost anything from a failing ignition coil through wiring and connections or a failing fuel pump to a faulty ECU.

When the ECU detects a fault it switches on the engine check light and uses programmed values to get you home and mostly very little difference in performance can be detected. The fact your engine stops indicates something necessary is dying, such as the spark or the fuel supply.

When the engine check light is switched on, details of the fault are stored in the memory of the ECU which can be read with a scanner or code reader. Sometimes a code isn't recorded which indicates the fault is outside the scope of the engine management system.

Best practice means before resorting to electronic diagnosis is checking the basics first; detailed visual inspection, ensuring the routine maintenance is up to date and competently carried out...

SOURCE: 1991 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Sedan Starting/Dying Problems

Ok this was all after the car was all warmed up how far can you go from a cold start until it "dies:?
I want to suspect a crank sensor or ignition module just because of the symptoms if nothing happens until the egine gets hot ,typical of a failing crank sensor andignition module, always replace them togother.
But there is one more culprit, the catalytic Converter, see they break up inside and over time the catalyist bounces around and becomes a ball, on acceleration the presssure of the exhaust pushes the "ball' of caytlist into the exhaust pipe opening restricting it until it shuts off the car. You pull over the pressure goes away the "ball" falls back into the cat, you start again and it starts all over again. I would hve the cat tested and you can do a test yourself hit the cat on the bottom with a hammer and if you hear some rattling inside when you hit it yhe catalist is broken and is likely your problem.

SOURCE: Chevy truck running rough 150,000 miles

Find out why the engine light is coming on, it is the info u probably need to fix the running rough problem. Most auto parts stores will read the codes stored in your trucks computer for free, write them down, and ask what they mean and how to correct the problem. If u need more info, return to this site w/ codes for further help.

Turn key ignition forward but do not start engine. Pump gas pedal fully 3 times then engine light will start flashing. Do not pump gas pedal short quick pumps. After light is flashing turn ignition off then start engine. The check engine will reset it's self.

DTC P1516 Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance

Your vehicle has an electronic throttle body unit so it uses voltage signals to control throttle blade in the throttle body. There are a few different issues that can cause this problem.

First off there is a update for the PCM to address those codes, but you will have to take it to the dealer for that.

Second there is issues with the actuator on the throttle body binding up and causing the codes.

Third there is a yellow wire coming off the throttle body connector that breaks inside internally and cannot be seen to the naked eye. The best way to test that is to grab the wire about 5 inches from the connector and tug if it feels spongy or breaks, that

Save Your Money. The Lumina is one of many GM throw away cars. Scrap it. You can buy a running car cheaper than fixing the Lumina. Just don't buy another GM product.

Your tranny filter may be clogged. It could be a gas problem, fuel filter or injectors. Try checking the filter and make sure to check the gas pressure. If that checks, it could be bad spark plugs and wires. Best bet is to try to get a code.

check for trouble codes first. it may have a trouble code to lead you in the right direction. Also check fuel pressure.

Im having the same issue I believe. I have a 94\' Chevy 1500 and when i accelerate it will jerk like the gas has cut out but it wont stall. It just jerks and slows me down. It only seems to do it when going up a hill. I feel like it could be the fuel pump or possibly some intake gaskets?
