Sure you can but the light is on because something is wrong.Buy an OBD 2 scanner at a local part store for about $35,(princess auto) plug it into the OBD 2 port under the dash (driver side) turn the key to the run position without starting the engine. It will scan the on-board computer and retrieve the code's, it will tell you what's wrong. Then follow the on screen instruction's for turning the light off.It will say something like erase code's or reset computer. If there is a problem with one off the O2 sensor's the light will come back on.Good luck.

97 chev 1500, 5.7 engine light stays on says faulty O2 sensor

Without knowing the specific Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) it is very difficult to troubleshoot this situation. This vehicle is capable of setting no less than 22 different DTCs for the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) alone. Code descriptions include low voltage, high voltage, slow response, insufficient activity, and heater circuit which could be set for either the upstream or downstream sensors on either the Bank 1 or Bank 2 side. Potential problems areas would include a faulty O2 sensor, open circuit, short circuit, excessively rich/lean fuel mixture, or faulty powertrain control module (PCM)/software. O2 SENSOR

Did you reset the codes after replacing the O2 sensor? It is possible sometimes that the values stored in the ECU for the earlier sensor may be giving the wrong readings. Try resetting the codes and see if it helps. Also, make sure that you replaced the part that was actually needed. If the OBD gives other codes, the problem might not be with the sensor.

I have a 96 gmc sierra. The OBD reads trouble code p0154. No activity in bank 2 sensor 1. I replaced the O2 sensor. How will the check engine light go off? do i unplug the battery for a certain amount...

You need someone with a programmer to reset it. Auto Zone used to reset at no charge but now laws have changed in some states because dealers were taking cars with check engine lights to them to have reset so they could sell cars without having to actually fix them. Hope this helps ,Good luck

Car shaking and sputtering. just changed o2 sensor and it did nothing. there is no pick up either

Exhaust couldbe stopped up. remove the O/2 and run it for a minute with the leak and see if the power is back like it used to be. If it is change the stopped up part ( cat converter, Muffler or bent pipe) and drive on. When running with a bad O/2 the convetor can melt and cloggup ( happen all at once)

Check engine light stays on.

you can diconnect the positive battery cable for 30 secs. or take it to autozone they can reset it for free. try waiting a day or two the engine must go through so many cycles without any problems before the light will go out. If it doesnt go out there is still a problem. More than likely if you changed catalitic converters and the light stays on it probaly has a bad O2 sensor.

Check engine light on 1997 Honda accord EX

Hi

If the engine is running without any problems then The fault code which has flagged the checked engine light will either pertain to the upstream O2 sensor, a drop in catalytic efficiency, an EGR issue, or maybe even an EVAP issue.

A lot of EVAP issues can be resolved by simply ensuring that the fuel filler cap is on securely, otherwise a vacuum leak will be detected in the system and the check engine light will come on.

A drop in catalytic efficiency (P0420) is usually temporary and will stay away after a reset.

EGR issues can sometimes be rectified by removing the EGR valve and cleaning it, and the ports on the intake where it was sat, but there are occasions when it has to be renewed.

The O2 sensor issues are a wee bit different. There are a number of fault codes which relate to the O2 sensor, and which make the O2 sensor look faulty, when the O2 sensor is actually attempting to rectify a problem from elsewhere and isn't faulty at all. However, they could also be due to a fault with the O2 sensor. Basically, further checks should be made before condemning the O2 sensor should the fault code relate to the sensor.

Have a code read done and then have the codes reset and see what comes up.

Regards

Geordie
