It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

SOURCE: How do I change the starter in a 2000 Toyota Camry LE

i'm sure it's not the starter itself that is the problem, have the stater's solenoid checked...it might be stucked. It's quite a lot of work removing the starter but you can do it if you are willing enough to learn. You just need the right idea and tools to do it. Hope this will help save you bucks!

SOURCE: 2008 Toyota Avalon Battery Problem

I doubt this is a smart key problem, the key uses a chip and its own battery. Something in the car is causing a drain, a light is staying on possibly. Trunk light, glove box light, under hood light... maybe you have a portable GPS unit plugging into the auxilary port? Just a thought. This is not a common problem that has been reported by Avalon owners as of yet.

SOURCE: car won't start after disconnecting battery to replace alternator

Are you sure you have the battery connected right, Red to + Black to -? The connections are tight? Are sure the new batery is good? I've seen that happen before where the battery is new but dead. Try jumping it from another car or put that battery in another car and see if it starts that car. If you have a voltmeter check the battery, it should be about 12.8 volts, then check while trying to start the car the voltage shoudn't drop below 10 volts.

Starter stays on with no key on my 99 Avalon

the starter solenoid is staying engaged internal. replace starter solenoid or starter you'll be fine. good-day. If it makes a rattle (clak.clack.clak) before it catches it's just worn teeth on the fly wheel and it goes away. If the starter isn't engaged by the selonoid but it has power it's defective. If that still isn't it it's either the wireing to the starter or the switch itself

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

I have a 97 Toyota Avalon XLS that won't start, had a new battery installed, still makes clicking sound when I try to start. After a few tries it may or may not start.

hi it does sound like the starter is stuck, there could be a way to free it and find out for sure if it is u/s, what you have to do is, locate starter on your vehicle, depending on its location you can try tapping it with a small hammer or a long bar of sorts, at the same time get someone to turn the ignition at the same time while you are tapping the starter, this should free the solenoid and then thestarter should work, if it does, turn the motor off, and try again and see if it works if it does your ok, if not then try the above again, if you have to do it every time you turn the motor off then you will need to replace your starter....hope this helps please vote thanks

Starting difficulties

if your battery is good, its most likey the starter contacts, there not very expensive you'll need to remove the starter and do it on the bench.
