SOURCE: 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Rear End problems
Hello, well you can look at it in a few different ways. Like you stated you can get a rear end from a salvage yard and not know what you are getting, you can spend some big bucks to get a new rear end, or you can get it rebuilt. I feel getting it rebuilt will be the better option. If you get it rebuilt you will have new parts in the rear end and know what you have verses the cost of a new rear end. This of course depends on how much damage there is in the rearend. Economically I feel that having it rebuilt is the best option. I always get nervouse when putting in any used part because you don't know what you are getting. If you do get it rebuilt make sure they put in new bearings which any reputible shop should anyways.
SOURCE: remove front axle from differential on 2003 dodge ram
That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings
SOURCE: REAR AXLE PROBLEMS ON 1997 DODGE RAM
did you check your transaxle fluid level? drain/replace transaxle fluid dont forget the friction modifier additive. it is required for proper function of your limited slip. signs of a failing differential are metal shavings in the bottom of the case, worn ring/pinion grooves. the other issue with your shift problem could be a failing shift solenoid, however, a vacuum leak will cause crappy shifts because your trans relies on good vacuum to shift.
SOURCE: 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 vent hose on rear axel
The hose is only an extension to elevate the vent. Trucks have these so they can be braver about crossing axle deep water.. The plastic piece on the end is somewhat of a chk valve so the hose isn't open to dirt and road spray. It should be cliped to the frame to stay elevated.

Well guys j pulled the differential pan and took my first look at the the gears inside and there was no metal shavings in the bottom and didn't sem to be any broken or worn down teeth on any of the gears. But at the time I only had one bottle jack and nothing that I felt safe with to brace up one side so I could see if getting the wight off the wheels would allow the axles to free up and roll forward again, but the inside of the differential looked good nothing loose no metal in bottom of differential housing, how ever it was way low on gear lube and what was there smelt burnt. Not a good sign.but I. Got jack stands today so lets see what happens when. I get the tire off the ground today. And thanks for all advise and I'm going to use the advice if its not a broken rear drive axle I have removed those before and installed a few but the only differential I've torn down and repaired was in a john Deere 744E and that was done in a shop that had all the special tools and technical manuals I needed to do the job. All my told were stolen almost two yrs ago, so I'm working with a basic 250 piece. Craftsmans socket set. No micrometers or any other special tools or equipment one might need. Well ill let you guys know more as I go along here. Peace Brett S.
