You have a serious short circuit in the instrument panel and if the fuse did not blow and if you didn't switch of the motor your car could have caught fire.
You need an auto electrician to fix this problem. You maybe able to trace down the short circuit by looking for burnt electrical wiring etc. but you also need a wiring diagram to trace the wiring to replace the the damages wiring and any components.

SOURCE: 02 gmc allison tran. wont go into tow-haul mode

THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF PLOBLEMS WITH THE SHIFTER HANDLE/SWITCH. THE BEST WAY TO VERIFY CONCERN IS USE A DIAG. SCANNER & VIEW TRANSMISSION DATA DISPLAY WHILE ENGINE RUNNING. THE SWITCH IN THE SHIFTER IS FAULTY. IF YOU SEE NO INPUT CHANGE WHILE DEPRESSING SWITCH THIS IS YOUR CONCERN.

SOURCE: 1989 gmc sierra 2500 problems

I just had the same problem. My speedometer was jumping up and down randomly, then would die completely...followed by all my other instruments. I thought i had a bad ground and spent hours looking. Soon followed a shifting problem where my it was not auto shifting. I had to manually change from 2-3, with no first gear. I immediately thought ground problem on the tranny. No luck again. Took it to have the codes read, which pointed to all shift solenoids, but i knew that could not be it. I was still set on a bad ground.

Took it to a transmission specialist to see if he had heard of the problem. He took a look and said it was the ignition switch. I though, how the hell does that have anything to do with...instruments....shifting...some many problems. Sure enough, i replaced and it runs like a champ. Hope this helps.

Bad starter solenoid most likely. If you can even see the starter (which I doubt) might try tapping it hard with a broom handle which could jiggle the parts in the solenoid and make it start. Otherwise, tow it and replace the starter and solenoid as one part.

Problem for GMC 1998 Suburban DIESEL DIES while

Its called the fuel pump cylinoide which is attached to the fuel pump. Unless the fuel pump is bad, you got an expensive part to buy around $2500 or the cylinoide is $900 whichever is broken. This is a know issue for GMC deisel suburbans 6.5.

Dash lights go out-

It could be a faulty dimmer switch. If the switch is fine then it might be a loose connection behind the gauge cluster. If you haven't pulled the the cluster off before. The plug is stationary and when you pull the cluster away it unplugs automatically. ButI would check the dimmer first.
