A body control module is a computer component in an automobile that checks, regulates and operates electronic devices throughout the car. There was a module for the air-conditioning, a module for the interior lighting, a module for the door locks, and so forth. A body control module gathers all these separate modules under one system so that they function together instead of separately, to make diagnosis easier for the mechanic and dealership a mechanic often is pointed to the right area by the body control module system, which sends out a code that shows what module is not responding. At times, good-day !

You take it to a qualified repair shop , unless you know about GMLAN serial data networks . U codes are network communication codes , problem with a module not talking or the data bus has a problem . GMLAN is general motors version of C.A.N. - controller area network . Watch this video . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqLDpHsxvf8

Body Control System Description and Operation
Report a problem with this article
The body control system consists of the body control module (BCM), communications, and various input and outputs. Some inputs, outputs and messages require other modules to interact with the BCM. The BCM also has discrete input and output terminals to control the vehicle's body functions. The BCM is wired to the high speed GMLAN serial data bus, low speed GMLAN serial data bus and Multiple LIN buses and acts as a gateway between them.
Power Mode Master
This vehicle body control module (BCM) functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determining the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information; the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. Refer toPower Mode Description and Operation for a complete description of power mode functions.
Gateway
The body control module (BCM) in this vehicle functions as a gateway or translator. The purpose of the gateway is to translate serial data messages between the GMLAN high speed bus and the GMLAN low speed bus for communication between the various modules. The gateway will interact with each network according to that network's transmission protocol.
All communication between the BCM and a scan tool is on the high speed GMLAN serial data circuits. A lost communication DTC typically is set in modules other than the module with a communication failure.
Body Control
The various body control module (BCM) input and output circuits are illustrated in the corresponding functional areas on the BCM electrical schematics. Refer to the Body Control System Schematics for more detailed information.
The bcm consists of three modules. I don't believe replacing one will fix the problem, r/r? You'll need to reprogram and probably need a manufacturer specific scanner to communicate. Hope the info below isn't too small to read?

Body Control Module (BCM)
Under the I/P below the radio on the right side of the center console.
Do you know what the purpose of the BCM is ?
The body control module (BCM) has a bussed electrical center integrated into the housing. Body control relays and fuses are installed directly on the BCM, which simplifies wiring and junction blocks on the vehicle. The body control system consists of the BCM and its associated controls. Battery positive voltage is provided to the BCM from IBCM BATT 1 fuse and the IBCM BATT 2 fuse in the underhood fuse block. The module grounds are wired to ground G201, G203 and G305. The BCM is wired to the GMLAN High speed serial data buss, and the GMLAN Low speed serial data buss, as well as discrete input and output terminals to control the functions of the vehicle's body.
Serial Data Gateway
The body control module (BCM) in this vehicle functions as a translator between the High and Low speed GMLAN busses. The 2 communication protocols use the BCM to translate communicated serial data messages between the control modules over the 2 serial data busses.
Power Mode Master
This vehicles body control module (BCM) functions as the power mode master (PMM). Refer to Power Mode Description and Operation for a complete description of power mode functions.
Serial Data Power Mode Master
On vehicles that have several control modules connected by serial data circuits, one module is the power mode master (PMM). On this vehicle, the PMM is the body control module (BCM). The PMM receives 3 discrete ignition switch signals to differentiate which power mode will be sent over the Serial Data circuits. The 3-wire Ignition Switch table below illustrates the state of these inputs in correspondence to the ignition switch position:
Relay Controlled Power Mode
The body control module (BCM) uses the discrete ignition switch inputs Off/Run/Crank, Accessory, and ignition 1, to distinguish the correct power mode. The ignition 1 circuit is also routed to the Run/Crank relay for relay controlled power feeds during the appropriate power mode. The BCM, after determining the desired power mode, will activate the appropriate relays for that power mode.
Reprogram the body control module (BCM) after replacement. Refer to Control Module References .
Fieros do not have a 'Body Control Module'. They have an ECM for the engine, V6s with cruise control have a module behind the carpet by gas pedal, 87-88s have a headlight motor control module behind the driver's side fender, and there is an Ignition Control Module in the distributor.
So take your pick of other modules, but sorry, no 'Body Control Module'. You must have gotten some bad info.
This generic "U" trouble code applies to all car makers and indicates
a problem between the PCM and the body control module. This is likely
the result of a problem in the data link between the two modules.
