I've found the problem, i have removed the box and had a friend look at it, there is a fork type thing in the box that selects the gears, this has broken and i will be ordering a new one in the morning. Thanks anyway

I've got the exact same problem on mine too - it will be going into the garage tomorrow, so bloody glad I found this post - could have left myself open to a horrendous ****-take from the mechanic...

CHECK CLUTCH CABLE! IF CABLES IS LOOSE YOU COULD HARDLY ENGAGE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR.
IF YOUR CAR IS USING CLUTCH CABLE, ADJUST IT
IF IT USES FLUID, CHECK THE RUBBER CAPS.

2000 VW Cabrio 5 speed manual. I had an emergency stop and used engine braking. Now I only have 1st and 2nd gear. I lost 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse. How do I fix or check linkage?

Question edited for clarity. Funky one space then punctuation :>D
Question moved to sub category.

Check out the videos on servicing the gear linkage. It contains plastic connectors. Personally, I would give a local transmission specialist the job.

I have a 1980 VW Golf. I cannot get reverse gear or 1st and 2nd without switching the car off and then selecting the gear? 3rd and 4th works fine.please help

hydraulic clutch needs attention
replace slave cylinder fill with fluid and bleed the air out
replacing the clutch master cylinder would also be a good idea as at 1980 model will be worn out if not replaced before hand
if cable clutch , replace the cable

Cant get golf in 1st gear

If you'd said 1st and reverse I would have said clutch. First check your gear sgift rod for aligbnment. If it is out when you push the gear lever left to engage 1st your selector might be somewhere between 1st and 2nd. Next check all the linkage bushes for wear. Those also cause misalignment. Last thing to check is the gearbox itself for synchromesh damage.

Golf GT Tdi 115 - performance when warm.

you dont say what miles the car has done.but you should now be using semi synthetic 20/50 oil and try using a fuel additive(redex/wynns)to clean the injectors.if you are using oil it is possible that the engine has lost some of its compression due to ring/valve wear.did you know that to convert your engine to a 130/150bhp unit, you only need to change the ecu try"diesel tuning"website.....

Vw golf mk4 no 1st & 2nd gear

You say there is no gears! does it go into gear, if so is there a horrible crunch??? can you put it into gear when the engine is turned off!
Sounds like to me that one of the linkage rods have broken/come off, these rods are situated just off the gearbox from the gear lever! there should be two rods i think! check these for damage/missing! replace if necessary!
Hope this helps
