2002 Audi A6 - locks itself.

My car will sometimes lock itself when the engine is not running. It makes no difference if the key is in the ignition or not. Has anyone else come across this problem, or know what causes this?

Thanks. Since I posted this problem I have spoken with our local Audi agent. He says the should not be locking by itself.

Newer Audis will do this as long as the key is not in the ignition. Do not leave them on the seat or in the ashtray!!

A lot of modern cars do this, i don't think there is a fault, i think it is a security measure, my Mercedes does it all the time. Just don't leave your keys in when you get out of the car.

try to turn the steering wheel slightly while turning the key. I would make sure the starter is bolted in good and not binding up.

My Audi A6 auto-locks itself while running with the keys inside. This happens repeatedly when I use the 'Start' button to start (i.e. proximity key) and then step out to brush off snow, move something in...

some markets have passenger compartment locking, when you start the cars engine the car will lock,(timed delay) some have a movement sensor which locks the car when in motion,vw/audi sell worldwide, so you have something that is in the handbook for the english speaking world.but not perhaps for where you are.hence your dealer may not know anything about/or be in your handbook.cars in germany lock with movement sensor/unlock in accident situation.
they have no reason to set system so that it remains open when not occupied..it is an anti theft device/stops people opening your doors when at lights....

Audi A6 Anti Theft Central Locking Tantrums

Sounds like you are having problems with your built-in alarm system. Like most systems in your Audi, you can read the error codes stored in the controllers. It takes a tool normally only a dealer has (VW or Audi) or an adapter like the VAG Com. (Google it)

I also think you can disable the alarm system and just use the key.

Could the lock button on your remote be stuck? Use a different key/remote. (leaving the suspect key at home.) The keys/remotes can be taken apart....

Difference between Audi A6 1.8t engine and 1.8 engine

It makes a big difference in acceleration. When the turbo spools up you will feel it in the seat of your pants. The turbo force feeds the engine air. More air means the engine can burn more fuel and more fuel means more POWER!!

Program a remote key for 03 A6

I have an A4 and did this to re-program my key:

1. used the key to start the car...then turned it off
2. put the key in the driver door (door closed)
3. pressed the lock button on the key fob once
4. turned the key to lock the door.

This is basically the steps in the owners manual, but the car must be started with the key first, and the key must be in the door lock before pressing the lock button.

Central locking system does not work

You should still be able to lock your car with the key, remember how we use to do it the old way..... with the key :-D. The central lock solenoid is located in the door itself, behind the door trim. Replace the offending solenoid with a new or used one. And once again you can lock/unlock the car with the remote
