When im driving down the road my oil pressure gauge will drop to 0 maybe fo 4 or 5 miles or maybe 100 yards then come back up to approximatly 40psi the dip stick shows full there are no noises high temp. gauge or no smell of getting hot is this my pump going out or a sensor how can i determine

Hello, let's see what you need.
Yes, the pump can go out that fast.
Do not start your engine. Go out and check the oil. If you have plenty of oil you will need to tow it to a shop. If your out of oil check the the drain plug on the oil pan and check the oil filter.

These engines are bad for sludge build up. It causes the oil to drain slowly back into the pan. When stopping the oil is actually going towards the front of the oil pan and away from the oil pickup screen. This problem cannot correctly be fixed without tearing down the engine for a rebuild.

Change the oil! The 318Cu in V8 (5.2 liter) engine has a problem with sludge build up on the oil pump pickup tube screen. This engine requires oil changes at or before 3500 miles with a high detergent oil.

I had the same problem and ended up changing the oil pump and it did not fix it. (Peace of mind anyway and it was cheap) I replaced the pressure sensor (that happens to be tucked in deep between the back of the engine and firewall) and the pressure gauge worked just fine after that.

I would replace the sending unit. It is an easy and cheap replacement compared to solving low oil pressure issues. If you really had low oil pressure than you would have heard noises like lifters clicking, rod knocks, etc.
