Idle was fine...then started to idle high at times...other times it is fine. Changed the TPS with no luck...any ideas what to do next?
I had the same problem on my 96 Discovery. It turns out, if the low end of the new TPS reads even a little bit higher than the old TPS, then the engine will rev high. It can be reset at LR dealership to map the new TPS, or you can hog out the screw holes on the new TPS and turn it clockwise until it reads as low or lower than the old TPS, or you can try cleaning the old TPS and reinstalling it. I was able to fix it by rotating, but I also was able to read the TPS signal at the OBD2 diagnostic port.
SOURCE: Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start
Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

THERE SHOULD BE A RADIO CODE CARD WITH THE VEHICLES PAPER WORK.IF NOT U HAVE TO CALL THE DEALER FOR THE CODE.

Had the same problem with my 03 Disco. Went through the usual, checking the fuses, etc. I went ahead and replaced my break light switch on the brake pedal. $15.00 fix, or I thought so; still had the problem! Took it in for repairs and found out it was fuses after all... To get the parking lock to disengage you need to pull of the housing, which is tough and then press in the locking pin at the base of the shift lever to shift out of park. you can do it with the engine running and it will drive just fine until you put it into park again. Check your brake lights if there is a problem. Could be a sign of the brake switch failure. In my case the lights were out, but a cheap trailer rental did the damage. The short in the trailer blew some fuses and it was a problem that cost me $60.00 at the repair shop....

I wanted to ad more detail to the fast idle problem with my 1996 Land Rover Discovery. Here goes.
I recently purchased the 96 Discovery...had no problems with idle at start up. I pressure washed the engine lightly with no problems. The next day I noticed a higher idle speed. At times, it idles around 2000 rpm...then at other times it idles 700-800 which seems normal. I changed out the TPS and have checked for vacuum leaks...none present. You can restart the motor a few times and the idle returns to normal. Could this be a dirty stepper motor?
Cleaned IACM(stepper motor) and throttle body...idled even higher and never goes back to normal idle. Then I put a new IACM and still no results. It's really strange how it would return to normal idles after restarts before cleaning the IACM and with a new one it doesn't. As for the low voltage to TPS code, I checked with a volt meter and it reads 5 volts in and .668 on the remaining two wire (assume to be outgoing). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
