Dads 1996 GMC Extended Cab Sierra. 5.7 His truck runs good for 2 or 3 days and then it pops backfires and barley runs. He has replaced tons of stuff, runs good for a few days and back doing the same thing again. Uncle Buck said he has had trouble with the same motor on many of the same style truck with the same engine. HE Said change ditributor and the problem will be solved. So I ordered one and need to install it. He said something about a brown wire you have to un plugg before you set the timing. And then plug back after the timing is set? I need more info please.

SOURCE: I want to replace spark plugs (8) and wires on my '84 GMC pickup
here ya there my friend. first thing you should do is spark plugs / wires / rotor (sits under the distributor cap). also get a distributor cap. thats a main ignition tune up. for the rest fuel filter air filter . etc

ok ran great before changes. right. you say unpluged computor to set timing.. yes.. do you mean the plug on the firewall passenger side that looks like a fuse holder kindof..?? (set timing connector ) (tan /blk wire)
did it run good during timing proceedure??? wont be MAP that is engine vacume has nothing to do with what you have replaced.
proceedure is to set timing . shut off engine , plug in.. then restart.
yes timing moves as per ECM specs. check that timing did no get out one tooth when you replaced distributor. retime . restart
