'01 Nissan Xterra won't turn over starter, after trying to start the headlights flash.

'01 Nissan Xterra won't turn over starter, after trying to start the headlights spontaneously flash for a bout 30 seconds. Won't take a jump. Cleaned corroded terminals, still no start. Let sit over night. Went back to pull out battery but started this time. Battery seems strong. Seems like some kind of short. Any ideas??

    Same Problem

  • ChadR1971 Jan 07, 2009

I have an 01 with the same problem. I just replaced the battery cs it kept dying after having left the door ajar the week before. But now that the battey is replaced it will not start. It was suggested that I put some Heat in the tank just in case - its been wet here. But that didnt seem to help. Do you have any other suggestions. Thanks Sooooooooo much. Chad

2001 X won't start. This happens randomly about every 6 months. Usually able to get it to start when I turn alarm on and off a couple times, shift between park and drive a few times, or have it towed. Of course it starts everytime for the repair shop and they cannot duplicate the problem. Diagnostics have been run on it several times. Battery, starter and alternator are fine. This time dealership suggest replacing a "plate" that evidently makes some sort of connection allowing the car to start when in park. They want $750 with no guarantees this will work. So fed up! Help!

Xterra won't start when the battery has juice free of corrosion and starter is freshly installed

Check the cleanliness and tightness of the battery terminals. Loosen, twist and retighten them. Also check the cleanliness and tightness of the black earth cable where it attaches to the engine block/bodywork. A bad earth can cause the symptoms you describe.

A quick check you can do is to connect a jump cable to the battery negative terminal - the earth - and connect the other end of the cable to somewhere suitable on the engine/bodywork.

If the car starts no problem with the jumper cable - it's pointing towards a bad earth/connection somewhere on the battery earth

2005 Altima won't start, hear clicking sound coming from fuse box,key stuck in ingintion, won;t turn over, tried to jump start.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

For the past 2 weeks, when I try to start my 2003 Nissan Xterra, it seems sluggish, but the engine will turn over. On 2 separate occasions, when attempting to start the engine, it wouldn't turn over ...

Checked Cables how?

Looking & Touching isn't doing anything

You have to do a voltage drop test or remove
& clean the ends. I would do both

Remove the starter & have it tested at parts store,
assuming you don't know how to do a voltage or
current test while cranking.
