It does not sputter or backfire the motor simply turns off
I suspect you have a bad distributor. Yours should have the coil internal to the distribiutr. When there is no spark you can check the two wires going to the coil. One should have power any time the key is on or the engine is cranking and the other should have power with the key on and flash a test light when the engine is cranking. If the test lights flashes it may be just a bad coil. If the test light does not flash it could be the module but it could also be a bad sensor in the distributor.

Yes, You need to remove the complete plastic lens, but its only one screw and after gently pull the light to the side to remove it. After You can change the bulbs as You wish. In the owner instruction manual its detailed described. If You have email, I can send You the photos.
