Xterra had sputterd and died a couple of times before..but would start back up and be fine. Today it was running and then died, and will not start...fuel filter??

It has been my experience with imports that their fuel filters typically are located either in the gas tank or in the fuel line from the gas tank to the pump. It will mostlikely be mounted to the frame of the vehicle and be metal.

my truck didn't do the crazy idling so much but it was running a little rough before it finnally died. it just wouldn't start back up. i changed the fuel filter i could hear the fuel pump working i finnally pulled a spark plug out and realized it wasn't getting spark. after hooking a computer module up under the dash it told me that the camshaft position sensor was out. the sensor is integrated into the distributor therefore you have to change the distributor to replace the sensor. hope this helps some, i'm actually trying to fix mine tomarrow

I just changed out a tailight on my 2000 Nissan Xterra, so I assume it may be similar. You have to pop the plastic strip which runs across the back. There are pop rivits in it.

It's under the truck on the frame rail by the gas tank

the filter is made of metal mesh and doesn't need to be changed...only flushed and refilled with trans. fluid.
