Either along frame rail or on the end of the fuel pump in the tank.

SOURCE: fuel filter

It has been my experience with imports that their fuel filters typically are located either in the gas tank or in the fuel line from the gas tank to the pump. It will mostlikely be mounted to the frame of the vehicle and be metal.

SOURCE: 2000 nissan xterra wont start but will crankover

my truck didn't do the crazy idling so much but it was running a little rough before it finnally died. it just wouldn't start back up. i changed the fuel filter i could hear the fuel pump working i finnally pulled a spark plug out and realized it wasn't getting spark. after hooking a computer module up under the dash it told me that the camshaft position sensor was out. the sensor is integrated into the distributor therefore you have to change the distributor to replace the sensor. hope this helps some, i'm actually trying to fix mine tomarrow

I just changed out a tailight on my 2000 Nissan Xterra, so I assume it may be similar. You have to pop the plastic strip which runs across the back. There are pop rivits in it.

SOURCE: Xterra Transmission Filter

the filter is made of metal mesh and doesn't need to be changed...only flushed and refilled with trans. fluid.

Our 2001 Nissan Xterra engine died at traffic light. Power seemed normal but engine will not run. 5 weeks ago we had it in for a tune up and oil change. Any thoughts on why it died and will not run when...

i assume that "power seemed normal" means that you can get engine to turn over, but not start.

possible problems: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, water or other impurities in gasoline, foreign matter in gas tank, faulty "electronic distributor", possible blockage of adequate air supply, broken timing chain.

if i were to have to guess, it would be the timing chain, especially if car was running well prior to this problem.

Forgot to notice the direction of fuel filter on 2001 nissan xterra

If it matters, the new filter will have an arrow showing the direction of fuel flow. Most in-line filters it doesn't matter. There are a couple out there that do, and the filter will say which way they go

It will turn over but not start

I just had to have my fuel pump replaced for the same reason. The first time it happened the truck started after I waited 10 minutes. The second time it started on the second crank. Finally it just died in the middle of the highway and would not start again.

2002 Nissan Xterra will not start. It acts like it needs gas but it doesnt. It Just died unexpectantly while driving.

most likely the fuel pump. First check fuel pump relay, listen for pump coming on when you turn on the switch. If it does, try changing the fuel filter next.

2006 nissan xterra keeps dying

If it dies while driving it may be a a crank sensor. If it dies when you take your foot off the gas cruising it most likely an Idle Air Control valve. Either way this should still be under warenty if it is the computer. All emission related parts are covered for 4 years. This includes the computers

Sputterd and died on the road

hi there, you might want to check the fuel pump relay, which is located in the relay\fuse (power distribution center) box under the hood.
