The idle is generally higher along w the fuel consumption when cold. Poss coolant sensor,, all sensors work together to adjust idle & adjust air/fuel mixture. A bad thermos would give u other symptoms too, {bad heating/ AC) Good luck scan it 1st & have all the SENSORS READING READ & ck for codes.

change fuel filter, add a can of SEAFOAM to tank of PREMIUM this 1 time. you have EGS(ethanol gas syndrome), and sounds like its very bad in your car. The corn by-product in your fuel creates a goop and puts lots of water in every part of your systems. you egr valve and your engine valves are heavily carbonized right now and need help.

Your injector spray is next to nothing. Your ECM controls the amount of fuel spray to your engine, and it the injectors are partially clogged, it tells the injectors to spray more to keep up;thus causing flooding.

I know it's alot to take in; but trust me, it's not fatal.

You may have to change your fuel filter again at 500 miles to get the last of it out, so if you do, you do.

Add SF every 3-5000 miles after this, and it will keep everything clean, unclogged, and carbon clean. GOOD LUCK

A dirty air cleaner will cause an engine to use lots of fuel and still appear to run fine especally in cold weather. If you have not changed your air cleaner in sometime do so and note the difference.

Also a sticking EGR valve i.e stuck closed at highway speeds / passing / starts and stops can rob you of fuel economy.

If you know any half way good backyard auto mechanics they will know how to test an EGR valve with an external vacuum hose.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Coaster idling high and high fuel consumption

Water temperature is low cost oil is certainly the easiest way is with a hard shell to block part of the warming effect of the radiator well as for how much you want to try to stop. Idle temperatures will rise up relatively low. What is the pull speed? Not run fast but continues to run uninterrupted some time. Usually two hours can be. Is to allow the engine to reach full swell purpose. Such a shift is to be based on the vehicle speed and the reference engine speed. Not based on the engine speed. Driving is probably the single 30 towards third gear, fourth gear towards forty, fifty five-speed ahead. Many people on the car ahead of change. As long as the engine sounds smooth, no trailer can be.

I have a 91 tercel that will not pass smog, unable to read codes, idles too high that if you put the car in gear before it warms up its jerks hard, appears to idle normally after warmed up, smokes pretty...

The smoking is probably due to worn valve guides.. the oil from the top..the head.. is leaking past the valve stem into the cylinder.. next morning or a few hours later when you start the car.. it burns this oil up..and the problem although still there is much less noticeable.. cause the amount leaking is minute..it's being burned as you drive.. otherwise it takes a while for it to accumulate.. It could mean a minor head/top end rebuild to a minor overhaul..

The emissions problem and the idle problem may be linked.

First make sure your throttle cable is clean and working properly. They can get dirty.. sticky..or even a weak spring.. but dirt rust and grime..biggest culprits.

There is an IAC (Idle air control) valve attached to the throttle body.. you may be able to spray carb cleaner into the closed throttle body to clean it.. You may need to replace this part. It can really get clogged with carbon.. and cause this high idle problem.

Next.. replace or remove/clean/reinstall the EGR valve...probably better off just replacing it.

Check all vacuum lines for cracks..replace as needed..vacuum hose is cheap.. and lastly.. do a minor tune up.. plug wires.. plugs (properly gapped of course). air filter and fuel filter..

Your car will probably pass the smog check even with the cold startup burning oil issue.. that's not what's causing it to fail..it's the EGR valve and possilbe lack of recent tune up.

You can continue to add oil between changes.. use a heavier weight.. and check often.. Once consumption gets more than a quart or so between changes..you can contemplate the real fix... or start pouring anything with the word miracle into it.(grin).

Great little car.. Best of luck!

High mileage car. Low quality Kenyan fuel. Low on

High on mileage means that the engine has done a lot of work, possible that the compression is down, need to check if this is below level, if there is oil used in excess then the engine needs an overhauling subject to the cost estimated.

Cant compromise on bad fuel as this will bring down the power of the engine.
High fule consumption means poor setting so fuel and ignition , check fuel settings- pump calibration and timing.

When i start my jeep in the cold mornings it starts up but bogs right down and stalls then i have to accelerate for the second start up for a few minutes to warm it up a little and then it bogs and stays...

Your only problem friend, is the temperature sending unit/sensor. Upon cold start, this sensor wil tell the computer to go into cold start mode putting a bit more fuel in and raising the idle a bit to keep it running when cold without using the throttle. Replace that sensor and your good to go. Makes sense, right?

I have a 1991 300E Benz, automatic tranny. when the engine is cold the engine turns but does not start emmadiately it will take a few tries and it seems the engine splutters for few seconds and when it...

When it is cold in the morning, the cold start valve will be opened to give extra fuel to help the start. If it is not opened then it would take longer to start. The cold start gets the feedback from a thermal sensor at the top engine block. Check out this sensor. When it is bad it would tell ECM that engine is warm so the cold start valve is not open. The sensor is cheaper than the cold start valve. The idle spec is 750RPM but I think it is high and wasting fuel. Mine is 600 RPM and its idle is smooth so I wouldn't worry about it is low, as long as it is not hesitating.
