The head light switch on my 06 dodge stratus went out and i had the hard wire the headlights dirctly to the battery. when i took the switch out of the steering column it was connected to the windshield wiper switch. how do you seperate the two switches without damaging the switches in the process.

Battery or starter gone

Possible causes would be fuse/s, wiring(mostly ground), light switch, or turn signal switch.

The park/headlight switch is bad

HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty headlight switch or issue with its wiring. Or its faulty head light fuse.

It may be a battery issue but if the engine is on and this happens it may be an alternator issue. This could also be a wiring problem. Check for loose wiring or bad wires if the battery and replay checks out OK.

Typically this is a switch issue. If you have bigger lights, that makes the issue happen sooner. What happens is the switch has a thermal fuse, designed to open to prevent wires burning, but then closing again to restore lights...

Headlight Bulb Replacement
1. Open the hood and remove the two headlight mounting
screws.
2. Remove the push-in fasteners for the grill area by prying under the
head of the fasteners with a flat bladed tool.

unless it is an add on after the car was made it quite possibly is for the day time running lights. because the lights stay on i would suspect it is a relay for the headlights located in the fuse panel near the battery. feel the tops of them if you don't have a diagram... the one that is very hot is the one. there is a chance that the daytime running lights module has failed tho they usually do not come on at all when that happens

make sure both bulbs are not burnt out on low beam
