Remove fender well trim ( a few screws)
Remove front bumper COVER (not the bumper- the plastic cover)
About 14 screws. Mostly on the underside, get a creeper, and a few
on the top.
Remove the (left or right side) Headlight assembly ( a couple more screws).
One assembly contains the headlight, turn signal and running light. Unplug
the electrical connector from the assembly. All bulbs remove from the back
of the headlight assembly. Headlight is held in place by bail wire, smaller
bulbs are 1/4 turn.
On your 4x4 need to remove head lamp assembly to change the burnt bulb. There is no need of special tools but I recommend the job to be done by VW electrician.
Step 1
Set the parking brake and remove the keys from the ignition to ensure your Chevy Cobalt won't roll while you're replacing the headlight bulb.
Step 2
Open the hood by pulling the hood release latch located under the instrument panel on the driver's side of the car. Locate the secondary release latch on the front of the hood at the center, slightly towards the driver's side. Slide the latch to the left to release the hood and raise it.
Step 3
Locate the headlight assembly and remove the bolts by turning them counterclockwise. Set the bolts aside in a safe place, so you won't misplace them.
Step 4
Remove the plastic fasteners from the headlight assembly molding. Carefully pull back the front fascia, or molding. You may need an extra pair of hands to perform this slightly awkward task.
Step 5
Grab the headlight assembly and pull it towards the radiator at a slight angle to remove it. This should provide easier access to the headlight bulb and wiring harness.
Step 6
Lift the plastic locking tab on the wiring harness to disconnect the bulb base. Then, disconnect the wiring harness from the bulb socket and remove the black retainer by turning it counterclockwise.
Step 7
Disconnect the bulb socket by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the old bulb from the socket by firmly, but gently pulling it straight out.
Step 8
Replace the old bulb with a new 9007 LL halogen headlight bulb. Put your headlight assembly back together by reversing the steps when you disassembled it. Use 89 inch-lb torque when retightening the headlight assembly
1
Locate and remove the power
steering reservoir from behind the driver's side headlight assembly.
Pull straight upward, sliding it off its mount and set aside for access
to the headlight bulb. Make sure you keep it upright so it does not
spill.
Step 2
Locate and remove the electrical connector from the back of the bulb. Depress the locking tab to release it and pull the connector down, removing it from the bulb.
Step 3
Turn
the bulb counterclockwise ¼-turn then pull the bulb straight out of the
headlight assembly. Insert a new bulb into the headlight assembly and
turn it ¼-turn clockwise to lock it in place.
Step 4
Install
the electrical connector by plugging it into the bottom of the bulb.
Push the connector in until the locking tab engages the bulb, securing
it to the bulb.
Step 5
Slide the power steering pump reservoir onto its mount.
Upside down L shaped bracket that is bolted to frame just behind headlight assy. Unbolt bracket, lift bracket straight up to unlock headlight assy. Headlight assy should easlier fall forward to replace any of the 3 bulbs
You do not need to take the headlight assembly out. It is not a sealed beam. There is a ring that locks the light bulb in, found on the back. The drivers side is much easier if you remove the battery. As with all Halogen bulbs, do not touch the bulb with your fingers as it will shorten their life.
The inverters (ballasts) are bad. They're mounted on the bottom of the headlight assemblies. You have to remove the front bumper and headlight assemblies to get to them.
It's not hard to do, just takes a bit of time. A dealer will charge you two hours or so of labor. The inverters are around $170 each the last time I checked.
Once you turn the octagon screw to release the light and push it forward or out of the front of the vehicle, take a light and look to the left side if your working on the driver side or the right side if your working on the passenger side and you will see a metal tab release. Take a long flat head screw driver and press down toward the ground gently. The headlight will be released and the whole assembly comes out as it has a plug/electrical connection on the back of the assembly. I just replaced my headlights, I have a 2004 Touareg with 44,000 miles and have already gone through 2 sets of headlights. The VW dealer will want $300.00 to replace 1 side! They have lost their minds. How long have you had yours and what engine do you have? Just curious if you have had any problems? My Touareg has just needed tires, brakes, headlights. I have done the brakes as well. They want around $900.00 + for front plus about 8 for the rear. If you need anything just hollar and if you have any questions just let me know if I canhelp.
