1997 ford explorer awd binding in tight turns

I have a problem with my Explorer binding when I make a sharp right turn. The transfer case was replaced with a used one yesterday cause the old one was making a horrible clunking sound. The truck does need an alignment so I am wondering if that may be the cause? The steering rack was replaced before I bought the vehicle. Have not noticed any ominous noise or clunking. Just a slight bind when turning right like the brakes are dragging.

If it's a grinding sort of noise, it could be a wheel bearing. What makes me guess that is the problem is "sharp right turn" and "like the brakes are dragging". If the noise is coming from the left side in a right turn, that's where the centrifugal force is throwing the weight.

My 1996 ford explorer will not move unless it is in 4wd. makes a whining noise when put in drive without 4wd engaged

Sounds like a transfer-case problem. It could be an internal gear problem or shift fork binding up or even a broken chain which all require it to be opened up. If it is the electronic version it could be a bad solenoid or loose plug connection.

I have a 97 ford explorer xlt. im not sure if it

I would pull the transfer case
Strip it & replace what is needed
& go from there, after reinstall

I would never install a used part
until it stripped it.

My 97 ford explorer AWD limited works great until the transfer case heats up. Then you cant turn sharp and the tires bark and chirp when turning

That is not good at all

With out jumping ahead here
Check the fluid level in the transfer case

If you have clutches in there, and I'am
guessing you do,I personally would just pull
the transfer out and open it up.

You most likely do not have that knowledge
or have the tools

I think the clutches are burnt up
Why, I don't know, but it has to be rebuilt and
move on

How can i make sure transfer case is unlocked on 97 explorer?

turn your wheel all the way left or right, hold it there and make a turn at 15-20 in a parking lot.if you feel the car shake and the front wheels kind of jump then your in 4WD.

Transfer case, tranny

I would check out the hubs and the drive axles first before changing the transfer case but I would do a differential service also if you never had it done since you have owned the car a 91 aerostar that is all wheel drive I thought I had the same problem and I replaced both hubs and one drive axle
