SOURCE: 64 Chevy pickup, rebuild engine, tapping noise in

Remove the valve cover and rotate the engine and check to see if all the valves are opening the same amount. If not, you have either a bad lifter, bent pushrod, or cam going flat. Check your valve lash with the valves closed. You should be at 0 lash at all of the rocker arms.

If the tapping noise speeds up with engine speed, a bad valve lifter.Depending on if it has hydraulic valve lifters.

How long did you drive without oil? Sounds like engine damage has occurred.

I have 94 ford probe 2.0 and it makes a tapping noise and sputtering sound it cranks but cuts off.what can it be

Sounds like some valve train problem. You mean it won't run at all, just sputters when cranking? Sounds like that could be one or more cylinders not firing because of valve train problem. If you took the valve cover off from the top of the engine, you could maybe see what is causing the tapping. Not that unusual for worn parts to fall out of place and not work the valves properly. If the valves don't work correctly, you won't get the engine started.
A '94 Probe...is that a beater needing a quick fix? Engine work can get very costly, so be careful.

There is a tapping noise on the top of the engine, when i revv it it gets faster

tapping noise is usually a problem in the head [valve train ] check oil level and oil pressure -tapping usually from oil starved ,worn or damaged -valve,rocker,push rod--also can check belt pulleys or alternator they can also cause a noise but the head area is the most common

Loud valve train

That or very worn cam bearings. Or both.
Usually if the oil pump is failing you will loose oil pressure as the engine warms up. Noise at first is excessive wear in the engine parts.
The noise goes away as soon as oil reaches the worn parts.

Check Utube for lifter tap, valve tap, and rod bearing noise. If you pull each spark plug one at a time, plugging it back in after each one, the tapping will go away if it's a rod bearing. At any rate, on your next oil change add some valve-medic or similar additive for valve noise. Make sure you follow direction or you will get massive lifter tap if you pour it into a cold engine.
