Cannot say i do offhand but yes your diagnosis is correct thats for sure and to get to anything i think you will need to remove the dash ,not a difficult job just time consuming thats all and remember to refit all the screws back in use a mobile phone to take lots of pics as you take it apart and hope your back is ok for all the bending upside down to do this job

Sounds like either the battery leads are on the wrong way round, or the starter main cable is touching something and shorting to earth. Retrace your steps and check your connection locations.
Either that or its a dead short through the starter. Remove main cable from back of starter and tape up incase of short. then reconnect battery. If ok now then your looking at starter motor.

Very easy - the car is designed to have these parts as being removable for the timing belt service. Opening the car is called the "service position" and involves taking these parts nearly off the car. You have to remove the trim panel around the stereo/climate control to expose the screws that hold it in place. Once you do that, and the screws are removed, it pulls straight out and unplugs. No need to disconnect the battery and no tricks to it once it slides out.
