Did you change the fuel filter when you changed the fuel pump? If there was any water in the gas, it can cause the filter media to swell and effectively plug an otherwise clean filter.
It sounds like your car isn't getting the proper amount of gas. You say your mechanic changed the fuel pump and the regulator. Id have him run a diagnostic tool on it to see if it throws any other codes. Its getting fire. Try changing the FUEL FILTER. it maybe clogged. maybe the pressure regulator is not giving it enough pressure to push the gas into the engine or maybe the fuel pump is only working at times. Does it run good and then start to spit and spudder then die? if so its not getting gas some how. Idk if you can adjust the pressure regulator or not. i mostly work on old school cars.
diesel engines high pressure pumps not suppose run dry.diesel fuel keep high pressure pump cool and lubricated.problem could be fuel pressure regulator in the fuel filter water separator housing.replace fuel filter see if it helps problem could be fuel pressure regulator in fuel filter housing, the fuel pressure regulator has a air bleed orifice that allows vent to the fuel tank.make sure fuel pump fuse okay pump getting power. i would let garage or dealership check it out if all fails because your diesel engine fuel timing is pcm controlled if let fuel system go dry you probably have to have fuel injection timing reset or could have damage high pressure pump letting it run dry i hope thats not the case because high pressure pump not cheap part i hope it not that.
first thought is that the catalytic converter may be plugged. when plugged the engine will run until it builds up enough back pressure to kill the engine. after it sets a while the pressure is released and the car will start again. you should be able to start it up and observe how much force your exhaust pipe has. it should be strong at first then decrease to almost nothing before it dies. try that and check back.
remember that any of the new parts could also be bad so you may need to do a pressure check on your fuel pump
REPLACE FUEL FILTER FIRST CRANK ENGINE.WHEN IT DIES AGAIN GET A FUEL PRESSURE READING WITH ENGINE OFF.IF FUEL PRESSURE REAL LOW OR ZERO FUEL RELAY FAULTY OR FUEL PUMP RELAY.FAULTY.
I would next check the fuel pressure regulator if the pump was not pumping, or the filter was plugged some of the leftover waste in the lines from one or the other of these issues may have plugged the regulator causing inconsistent fuel pressure that would cause the engine to run rough, or possibley cut out fuel entirely, causing the vehicle to die
