Tranmission fluid is leaking
Hi Sandra:
Normally if oil or transmission fluid mixes with coolant it will turn milky looking like a milkshake. Your leak must be pretty fresh. from your description that it is coming out of the coolant overflow I am thinking you have a radiator transmission cooler leaking into the cooling system.
You will need a new radiator and possibly all the coolant hoses if they have become soft from the transmission fluid.
In most cases if your getting transmission fluid in the radiator it is cause by a bad transmission cooler that is built into the radiator and the fix is to replace the radiator.
The repair will change in price from where the leak is coming from. If the pan is leaking or the rear seal your looking at $100.00 or less. If the front seal is leaking then around $550.00. The most common leak is the pan gasket. Also if the transmission fluid and filter have not been replaced in the last 30,000 miles and the pan is leaking then I suggest doing this also why the pan is off .
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback

its either next to the engine oil dipstick or around left side of car by transmission. if it needs fluid it might be a good time to have it serviced

the front shaft seal is bad on the transmission, pull out the transmission and replace the front seal which is about$8.00 for the seal

Get underneath and dry off as much as possible all of the fluid you see. If it is a bad leak, it will drip when the vehicle is off. Place a piece of cardboard down under the vehicle and you will be able to find the area where it is leaking. If it is not too bad, you can pick up and additive from an auto parts store and add it to your tranny fluid. This normally helps to "condition" the seal that is in question...more or less helps the seal to swell for a period of time. Try this first and see where it is coming from. Then, come back and post where you found the leak coming from. Usually it is the tailshaft seal located where the drive shaft connects to the yoke which in turn is "butted" up to the tailshaft housing of the transmission....or the transfer case.
Post back what you find and we'll tell you how to fix what is wrong.
