Hi i have got a 1995 subaru impreza wrx sti and it is overboosting in all gears and was wondering what this could be. Many thanks, logan.
I bought a 1995wrx turbo japanese import 260bhp standard, which can only run on v-power 99octane fuel, from scooby clinic in chesterfield (scooby race tune expert mechanics).I was the first person in england to test drive on road (it had not long arrived in the uk & had been put on rolling road a few times),whilst test driving, the turbo boosted normal & then started juddering slightly etc etc,i asked scooby lad "what was that" he wasnt sure(office boy!) & assured me that whatever it was theyre top mechanics would sort it out & do a full service, change the belts etc etc, ...so i bought it,luckily with a 30 day warranty included starting from collecting it.I picked it up about a week later,i got as far as 20mile away(nearly home) & it started juddering again, nothing too serious,so i thought we'll see how we go.next day same again, after 3days it were juddering more visciously, getting worse to the point where i nearly hit the windscreen,i thought its got to be a fuel blockage?.it backfired twice & not long after that packed up & would not start again,i foned scooby clinic & towed car back up to chesterfield.they kept saying "i must of put wrong fuel in",they ended up taking engine out cos head gaskets had blown, engine had died,6-7 wks later they told me to come & collect car with no charge,i was told to run it in for 500 miles steadily,& then take it back, they then changed oil, sparplugs & boosted turbo back up(re-connected it),the boss apologised to me & said if he knew it were like that he would never have sold it at all to anyone,he explained that the engine was carboned up(blocked) they did a nearly full engne re-build free of charge.the boss said if he knew it were blocked up they would of gave it a thrashing to clear the engine.
If you think about it lads, when u accelerate & the turbo boost pressure builds up,the juddering is caused by the turbo boost pressure not being able to flow properly through the blocked narrower pipes into the engine, this increases too much pressure on the turbo pushing,so therefor the turbo stutters (it cant spin freely enough).if this continues like mine did the gasket will blow or something drastic/similar will eventually happen.the harder you accelerate the more it will judder, the less you accelerate the less juddering(less pressure trying to flow through semi blocked engine).the wastegate releases spent air turbo pressure when u lift off accelerator, ready to boost new clean air for re-accelerating,so if the wastegate were sticking and not allowing pressure out,the turbo would still stutter/judder but on de-acceleration not on acceleration. i.e the turbo is free at lowish revs(lowish pressure),but juddering starts to occur as turbo boost pressure increases & juddering .gets worse as turbo starts to boost maximum. please dont kill your scooby!! these lightweight alluminium engines run hotter than normal steel engines,so if you only travel short distances with any alluminium engine then chances are,the engine wont get hot enough to burn the fuel properly and so the engine will start coking and choking up because of unburnt fuel deposit slowly building up and blocking the engine. thats f*****g killed me writing that,i hope atleast one of you listens & saves your scoobys life, these rally engines are bullit proof and outstandingly amazing, those japs re-wrote the history books! look after your scooby & it will look after you.im out of here!

Do you have a manual boost controller (mbc) installed? I have a 96 WRX and had the same problem and so took out the MBC. It now runs sweet. If you don't have one check the vacuum hoses from the turbo to the wastegate and also to the boost control solenoid, make sure they are tightened with cable ties or a hose clamp. Also could be your spark plugs make sure you have iridium ones, they out perform any others.

My car is a UK2000 Model has a VF34 Turbo STI intercooler and HKS Dump Valve, full stainless steel exhaust system manifold to tail pipe. not it Recently it has been boosting then the power drops of like its being held back, then keeps pinking like a motor bike which is tuned incorrectly, then the boost comes back, from 5200rpm all the way to 8000rpm, I fit A ecu of a friends car but the problem continues.... Does any body know if it could be the waste gate on the turbo.. Please help if you can
My car is doing the same, it boosts from 3500rpm then drops off at 3900rpm, stutters like mad, power on off, on, off, juddering.. like its badly tuned 2 stoke motorcross bike.. once you have got it past 4700rpm the turbo seems to wind up and the boost comes back.. Im not sure if this is a problem with the waste gate, I have looked through the fault codes.. cant find anything.. Im going to try a ECU reset this morning... all the sensors have been checked and pipes tested for leaks.. I just think the turbo is providing to much boost... then comes back once the pressure has dropped.. I will be looking into it over the weekend... if I find anything will let you know... If you have resolved this problem please let me know what was wrong with your car
my scooby was at full boost on my way to ringwood wen the intercooler blew off the engine i went and saw a mecanic he said that it might be the waste gate so we looked at that turns out the intercooler hose was slightly undone after we tightened it it was fine but then it happened again any suggestions would be a great help cheers
