Your engine uses a belt, the shop most likely wants to use a timing belt kit, you should replace the cam belt driven water pump as well

This is the timing belt kit
ACDELCO Part # TCK297P {6 Components (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 1 Idler, 3 Seals) #19164609}
BELT KIT,TMG INTERFERENCE ENGINE APPLICATION; DOES NOT INCLUDE CAM. TENSIONER HYD. ASSY.; TIMING BELT COMPONENT KIT W/SEAL PRICE $167.79

This is the water pump
CARDONE SELECT Part # 5583414 volkswagon passat 4 motion v-6 timing belt - moreinfo.gif PRICE $70.99

So about $150 for parts, labor should be around 3-4 hours, here is California the job would price out for around $600.00

The parts are from the lowest price I found on the internet, this is WWW.Rockauto.com

I recently had my water pump and timing belt changed at pepboys. everything seemed okay and not even thirty minutes after I picked the car up, my check alternator message came on and battery started...

Chances are when they changed the water pump and removed upper & lower water hoses they saturated the alternator with antifreeze/water. When installing a timing belt - IT HAS TO GO BACK EXACTLY AS MANUFACTURE SPEC SAY. (period). If the timing belt is even 1deg off it will damage your motor. It sound like they where short handed and asked the spare tire jockey to fix your car. Go back and ask for the service manager and tell him you want the car fixed right.

I have a 2002 Passat with a v6 engine with 65 000 mi . When should I replace the timing belt ? I understand the manual suggests 100 000 mi but I have heard many lower numbers . Thanks . [email protected]

I have an 02 Passat 2.8 4 Motion. I just had mine done at 95k and my mechanic said the belt was in surprisingly good condition. Although, its better safe than sorry. VW/Audi has had a history of premature belt breaks. If it does break say good bye to your engine. Both the 1.8T & 2.8 are interference engines. The cylinder will crush the valves.
Use a private shop...I paid $560 for both timing belt and water pump. Dealer quoted me $1300!

Check engine light flashing and car idling low. 2003 Passat V6 4Motion. Recently replaced the timing belt. Was told this is unrelated. Need to replace Cam Belt for cylinders 4,5, and 6

First things first. The check engine light is blinking because the engine is misfiring to a point that could damage the catalytic converter. If cylinder 4 5 & 6 are all misfiring i would check the engine timing belt for proper installation. These are the cylinders for the left bank of the engine. If the belt has jumped or was installed wrong this would explain the misfires. Unfortunately this is an interference motor which means there is a high probability if the belt is on wrong, the engine valves mat be damaged. I would perform a compression test on those cylinders to verify the belt condition. Hope this helps.

My 2006 2.0 litre turbo volkswagon passat started making this very loud whistling noise yesterday evening when i left owrk. The car had warmed up and I start hearing this noise. What could this be? No...

You are the bestt person to identtify the source of the sound before we can go about a long check list. so open up the bonnet if you think it is from the engine side. Look for possible noise from
1. water pump
2. Alternator bearings
3. Idler pulley
4.AC clutch pulley
5. Belts..Tip Is: try to pour some water over the belt to confirm
6. main crank pulley
Hope you check this out. Helpful I hope. Good day

Tryed to change the battery in my 2000 Volkswagon Passat

There is a way of running it by putting the spare key in the ignition and turning the ignition on but dont start the car, put the second key in the drivers lock and turn as if you are opening it until you hear 2 beeps, then press the unlock button on the remote while in the door. The car should beep once and flash the indicator lights.Remove the door key and remove the ignition key then lock the car using the remote.Open the car and try the ignition. Some systems lose the memory of the key chip so this may help you but with technology it works for some and not for others.

Hi Looking to get the timing belt changed on my 2002 Passat GLX 4Motion. I have 145000 miles on the car. But after speaking with the mechanic its going to cost me over $1200. Not somthing I have available...

Jen... I have a 2002 Passat 2.8 V6 4Motion with 125,000 I just changed the Timming Belt, Water Pump, tensioners and thermostat. One dealer was charging me 1500 dollars and the other just 1000... I bought the parts myself thru www.germanautoparts.com and found a mechanic with experience, and he charged me 420 dolares. In total I paid something around 650 for the repair. In the end, my timming belt could last me more than 20 thousand miles more... but either way is a risk. If the belt brakes the repair will go for 4000 dollars to fix the engine. I'm in NE.

Have a 2000 volkswagon jetta 2.0 litre that is overheating on idle the fans work and justed changed the thermostat

You need a water pump which is located behind the timing belt cover. You can do it on the car but its difficult. The water pumps have a plastic thats right a PLASTIC propeller on the inside of the block. They are only good for 30,000 miles thats what I was told. Trust me these cars have all kinds of problems. I have worked on a few of them and there not as good as they say. Parts cost do it yourself $60 and up. And if you need a timing belt the motor has to be drop. If you have a car service center do it plan on forking out $500 - $1200 bucks. Buy American so I can keep my job.
