I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty and the oil pressure light comes on in the mornings when it's cold. It doesn't happen when I'm moving, only when I'm stopped for more than about 5 seconds (so not in stop & go traffic, more like at stop lights).
This just started happening about two oil changes ago. I took it to the shop the first time and they spent 2 hours trying to diagnose and/or repeat the problem and couldn't. They charged me for the diagnostics ($110) and their solution was engine oil additive.
I would like to know if:
a) anyone else has had this issue
and
b) what the root cause might be.
The additive is working, but my fear is that it's a band-aid and something worse will happen down the road if I don't take care of the root of the issue soon.
Chrysler mounted the oil sensing unit on these motors directly above the oil filter. It is very easy to accidently hook the sensing unit with the oil filter wrench and crack or break it. For anyone whose oil light problem developed right after an oil change, this may be the problem. To change the unit, pry up the plastic retaining clip with a screw driver and unplug the wire harness. If the plastic part of the sensor is broken, (or if you break it to facilitate easy removal), you can remove the sensor with a 27mm socket. Once you have removed it, use a piece of CLEAN pipe cleaner to insure the hole isn't plugged with sludge which could also cause the oil light to come on. Screw in the new unit finger tight, then snug up with a WRENCH. You cannot use the socket to tighten it as it would damage the plastic part of the new sensor. Plug the wire harness back on, then start the engine to make sure it doesn't leak oil around the new unit.
I had this same problem on my Jeep Liberty 2002. The car would beep and the check engine oil pressure light would come on when idling at low temperatures. I had the Engine Oil Pressure sensor replaced and that resolved the problem.
I would recommend 5w30 oil for cold weather driving. 10W30 is not designed for cold temperatures.
I also have a 2002 Jeep Liberty and from what I have been told is, it is the valve stem gaskets that need to be replaced and my jeep is burning oil. Funny though because it does not smke but I have to add oil every few hundred miles and there are no leaks. Some of the time my iol light will come on when I am driving but more when I come to a full stop and when I drive it - it goes off. I am taking it to the shop tomorrow and have the oil pump replaced and not only that last week it was my power steering pump, now my radiator needs to be replced and so I am doing the oil pump and see if that helps. I have to drive this baby cross country and it only has 105,000 on it. It also make a winndy noise when I start it and it is cold but when it warms up the sound goes away, not sure what that is but sounds like something next to the power steering pump maybe thge alternater, who knows. If anyone has a answer please let me know.
Sounds like the flow back in the heads or stoping up. by adding additive it thinned the oil out, causing it to return to the oil pump faster. may have to do engine flush? do you have high miles? try using 10-30 or 10-40 weight oil. hope this helps
I Have Had This problem and we solved it by changing the oil pump , it seemed the pump would work on slower speeds but then when going faster it would cut out or just only catch the odd time to pump the oil.
The same thing happened to me after an oil change in my 03 Jeep Liberty! The oil level is O.K. but it still makes me nervous to drive it. A friend (mechanic) told me this is a common thing for Jeeps with higher miles if they put in thinner oil. Tomorrow I shall go back and have them put in 10W30 weight. Hope this helps.

I HAV A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY MY OIL LIGHT STAYS ON AND MY JEEP SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL NOISE. PLEASE HELP!!!
Exact same problem on my 2002 and i use 10w-30. Is your jeep leaking? Also i have heard of a potential faulty oil pressure sensor... But it doesnt make sense because i only see the issue in the morning when idle drops to 600-700 rpm range. If i lightly tap the throttle and keep it around 800-1000... the light goes off.
Any ideas where i can quickly connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge?
Jeep Liberty oil pressure light comes on in cold problem, and notify you when a new solution is offered.
I am having a similar problem... well it was the same problem until today...
My 2002 Liberty's oil pressure light would come on when I was idling at stop lights. The first time it happened I checked the oil levels and they seemed fine. I had the oil changed and hoped it would correct the problem. The next day it happened again (it was not just in the morning for me it has been all different times of day). I asked my friend that is a mechanic what could possibly be wrong. He said if it is not making noises there is probably nothing wrong. "Drive it til it locks up" he said. Not wanting to pay for a new engine, I was careful about where I drove it. It seemed to be fine for the next week, I even took it out of town without any further problems. I was gone for a week and came back and started driving my car around town. Again the oil pressure light came on at a stop light. I pulled over again, but then decided to go home and see if I could get it to a dealer. I had gotten an oil pressure sensor when it happened the first time thinking it could possibly be that. We werent able to reach the old one ourselves so since the problem hadn't happened too often, I forgot about it. Well this time I drove it 60 miles to the dealership. And of course, the light did not come on for them. They even asked me to point out exactly which light it was. They offered to go ahead and put the sensor in since i was paying the $85 dollars regardless. So they did, and I pulled out of the dealership and the light came on again! I stopped and called them right then. I had to go around the block to get back to the dealership and the light came on 4 more times!! So the mechanic took it out again. And once again, it didn't do it for him. We came to the conclusion that it wasn't hurting the engine at this point and for me to just drive it. So I did. I went across town about 15 miles on interstate and highways. No problems. Then I pull out of a store on my way back home and it starts going off about every few seconds. I stopped turned it off and tried again. The light and beep continued my whole way home. Whenever I would get up to 25 or 30 mph (on then off) and when I hit 43, it would stay on until I came back down to 40. I am EXTREMELY aggravated with this problem!! We are thinking it could possibly be the battery though. My interior lights have been flashing on and off when I use my turn signals as well (sometimes just random moments too). We also have a Ford Explorer that went crazy with locking and unlocking, door ajar lights and all sorts of other things when the battery got low. We are going to try and replace the battery and see if that fixes the problem.
I will let you know!
It ended up that the oil pressure sensor was broken in two pieces and leaking oil. We replaced that but the engine was still having several other issues.
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty (91,000) and my check oil light started coming on last week. I drove on the highway to work (10 miles) and the oil light came on when I stopped to turn onto another road. It went off and I drove about a mile to work. The light came on again. I went to a shop by my work and they couldn't look at it until the next day. I drove home. When I got at the 10 mile mark the light came on again. I drove about a mile to a shop by my house. The light came on again.
I had had the oil changed the week before and they suggested checking to see if the oil resend unit had been jarred. I went a couple of blocks to the place and they checked the oil, the oil filter and the unit and said it was fine. I drove the next several days, just staying in the neighborhood, and the light never came on. I went to work this morning and at the exact same intersection the oil light came on again.
Any thoughts why driving 10 miles at 65 - 70 causing the light to come on, but driving 10 miles at low speeds doesn't cause the light to come on?
2002 Liberty V-6 105000 miles.
Right after oil change oil light started coming on upon warmup. Mechanic checked pressure as OK (about 30psi) Sensor changed by mechanic, now light comes on above 2000rpm, like a watch, after cold start. With warm start, light does not come on, even after hours of driving.
Very frustrating to worry about toasting the engine.
oil ligth come's on while in motion.
