1988 Chevy k1500 4x4 5 speed need to know what gear ratio the rear end is. Says on the ring gear 3984831 12-41 G.M.K.

you can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that # by the tooth count on the pinion. An example is: ring gear 100, pinion 10 ...100divided by 10 is 10, expressed as 10 to one. (fake #) your diff is likely a 3 series such as 3.23 to 1. or a four series such as 4.11 to 1. If you have four wheel drive it is critical to match exactly. if not you can get better performance by changing ratio to something that better fits your needs. 4 series pull loads well, 3 series are better on fuel.(depending upon terrain)

Take the bolts out that attach the steering box to the frame and pivot the box so you can fit the puller on.
Leave the steering shaft and power steering hoses attached.
Mark the new pitman arm and old one in the same place and mark the pitman shaft to keep the same position of the new pit man arm on the old shaft as the old pitman arm.

A 10 bolt differential case has a 8.5 ring gear . A 14bolt has 2 different covers one is a 9.5 the other is a 10.5 .

You can change the ratio back to 4.10. However, if you do not already have the specialty tools required to do the job, you will likely be better off finding a shop that will change the gears for you. A mistake as simple as incorrect backlash will result in destroyed ring & pinion gears.

Your cheaper options will be :
1. Find a matching rear-end with 4.10 gears and swap it in.
2. Purchase the ring and pinion, master install kit, and find a friend that has installed gears before to help you out.
3. Find a 4x4, Hotrod or auto shop that is will swap the gears for you. If the axle is in the car, it's usually more expensive than if you carried the axle in for them to work on.
4. Purchase R&P, Master install kit, all the required tools. Then hit the books to find the proper procedure and measurements for that axle.

No chances are it probably won't you will have to take the rear differential cover off and get the numbers off of the ring gear divide the small number into the big number and it'll tell you what ratio the ring gear and pinion are

Can I put a 366 cid engine and a 5-speed transmission in a 1988 1Ton 4WD Chevy P/U with the C/K body style?

Yes for the 366 since it is a MKIV like the 454; the difference is the taller deck making it taller and wider, but I would expect there is plenty of room in the C/K engine bay for the taller deck 366 MK IV. Note the 366 also takes a different intake than the short deck MK IV.. What 5 speed is it. The 5 speed may (very likely will) be different than the 4 speed that came in the truck. Since you have a 4WD, the location of the output of the 5 speed vs-a-vis the 4 speed is quite important. You may be looking at altering location of the transfer case and changing the length of both drive shafts from the transfer case to the banjos. If you have a drive train specialty shop in your area I would get their input on the changes (cost) involved in the possible drive train changes required by the length difference between the 5 speed and the 4 speed gearbox.

My 1996 camaro z-28 need the rear end replaced, so were is the id tag, that gives me the correct rearend , in hte car and should I pull out the complete rear end and have it rebuiled, and then reinstalled...

If you take the VIN # to a GM dealer they should be able to tell you the original rear end that the vehicle came with. If you are going to take the rear end to a shop they will be able to tell when they take it apart. If it is a posi rear end it will have a tag under one af the cover bolts (if it has not been removed) Once inside a posi rear end is immediately identifiable from the clutch pack. Also the number of teeth is stamped on each (pinion and ring) gear. Divide ring gear # by Pinion gear # to get rear end ratio. Didn't get directly to your question, but I hope this helps. I have a 1991 dodge dakota that blew out the rear end, where can i find the gear ratio for the new rear end that i need?

I will assume you are missing your id tag. You will need to remove the rear cover and count the teeth. If you have never opened a drive axle I will warn you it will most certainly stink.

Now to figure the gear ratio:

The best way is to count the teeth on the ring gear and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. Or you can count the number of turns of the pinion it takes to get one full turn of the ring gear.


For example, if we divide a ring gear with 41 teeth by a pinion gear with 10 teeth we find that the gear ratio is 4.10:1 (41/10 = 4.10).

Rear gear ratio for 93 toyota 4x4 pickup 5 speed.

The C/Tr: C refers to the colour of the vehicle Tr refers to the interior colour A/TM is your transmission type. None of those numbers identify the rear end ratio.

What you need to do: Since you have to replace the rear end, yank it out. Examine the ring & pinion gears on the differential carrier. Mark on each a starting point, and count the teeth on both the ring & pinion gears. Now, after you have both totals of teeth, divide the # of teeth on the pinion by the number of teeth on the ring gear. Example: 12 teeth on the pinion, 46 teeth on the ring
12/46 = 3.83 ratio
