I just purchased a really great 1989 Dodge Raider (V-6, automatic). I was driving down the highway when the check engine light came on. I noticed it was running at almost 4,000 RPM while I was at 70 MPH. Just wanted to know if that sounded to be in the "normal" range. I was planning on going to my mechanic next week to give the car a once over, but I wanted to know if I should stop driving it in the meantime.
Sounds like the transmission is not shifting into a higher gear. 2,500 to 3,000 rpm would be more realistic for a highway cruising speed. The higher rpm may not be a big deal as far as the engine is concerned but it will hit you pocket book pretty good when you loose the mpg that you should get.
I would personally either limit your driving until it can be checked or at least slow down so that the RPMs are in the range listed above.
Let me know what they find, my curiosity is peaked!

It sounds like the last gear in your transmission may not be engaging. Caravans are actually famous for tranny problems. Furthermore, be sure to check your transmission fluid while your vehicle is idling. That ensures accuracy. But you may have to get someone to physically look at it to ensure your problem gets solved. Kind of risky diagnosing something so big through typing.
