Please help. I have a 1996 Cadillac deville v8 northstar. My question is what is the cause of overheating. Symptoms. 1. White smoke out of the tail pipes. 2. No loss of hp. 3. No loss of coolant unless I over fill the res. Tank and it comes out the overfill hose. 4. New radiator and new thermostat. 5. Only starts to overheat when I put power to the trans. And can idle all day without overheating. 6. I have heat until it reaches 250. dgf. Then it goes cold. 7. When in drive idling and heat on full, on defogger I can start tO smell antifreeze. Sometimes and I think that is because of the overfill tank getting rid of the extra antifreeze. 8. I have yet to find a leak any where. Thank you for looking into the issue. And any guidence would be very useful.

To check for leaks go to an accredited radiator shop and have a pressure test done --check that there are no air locks in the system
the transmission could be the problem as the transmission oil cooler is in one of the radiator tanks
when idling there is no torque in the transmission but when travelling the transmission is under load
IT might be advisable to go to an accredited auto transmission shop
have an oil change done and have the bands and clutch packs adjusted
the pan has to come off to do that and if there is a problem in the transmission , there will be signs in the transmission pan

SOURCE: 1999 cadillac deville overheating

my husband did everything that everyone else did that had this overheating problem. It was so weird that my engine cooled at a light and heated up going down the road. I have a north star 4.6 engine and this is natorious for happening. my check engine light also came on and so I had a diagnostics done which told me my #1 injector wasn't firing , car ran like **** as well. After putting in a new water pump and plugs, ect. and realized injector was good a friend told him we could have a blown head gasket. So just to see if this was the problem I went to buy a bottle of glassbeads and the auto parts guy told us to purchase a bottle of BARS STOP LEAK BLOCK SEALER NOT RADIATOR BUT BLOCK SEALER $31.99 . He followed the directions and we waited 24 hrs. before driving it. What ever the problem was has stopped my car runs like brand new and I am loving it again. no over heating no injector problem, runs great.......I hope this helps. I know its probly a temperary fix but its a fix and now we know what the problem was. SASSY

SOURCE: Engine overheating in traffic or when idling

I'm assuming your car has the Northstar engine?.

Strangely enough,if you remove the thermostat in the Northstar engine, it will overheat, this is because the stat is both a thermostat and a pressure valve.I can't be bothered to explain in detail how the whole cooling system works but please understand that you need to put the stat back in,(or preferably a new one).As for the cooling fans, what you described is normal for the Northstar.
Further to this, look at my profile,I have provided similar solutions for overheating problems.

Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

what you can learn to do is google it.
here is how to do that
I google new rebuilt raw engine blocks for sale.

lets to LD8
the DeVille Concours was available with the new 270 hp (201 kW) LD8 Northstar V8, and later, the high-output L37 Northstar generating 300 hp (220 kW).
LD8
first hit shows VIN-=Y shows 4 in the 2 heads 2x2.=4
left and right heads outside ends. and 1 rear and front of head for 6 total,

White smoke from under the hood of a 1999 cadillac deville with northstar what could it be

it sounds to me like the car is in need of a mojor flush and possible fan swith temp module. that could cause the radiator cap to over pressurize and shoot water out . can you give any more details? does it cool back off when you drive?

I have a 1997 Cadillac Deville. I just had the radiator and the water pump replaced. Afterward my service engine light comes on and blinks occasionally during the first minute of cold startup. This...

Sounds like a head gasket leak. I have a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limo with the Northstar 4.6L engine. I had a misfire on cylinder 1 that seemed to go away after I added Bar's Leaks Head Gasket Repair for about $30 at Advance Auto and the leak went away. Be sure to get the Head Gasket repair that can be added to regular antifreeze without draining it out and having to add to pure water.

http://www.barsproducts.com/1111.htm

Also, check the code for the associated problem If there is a particular cylinder missing, it might be being caused by the antifreeze leaking into the cylinder on that cylinder that is missing.

Good luck on this Northstar Engine Repair.

My 2000 cadillac deville keep running hot when i drive it.the coolant shoots out the coolant tank when i open it.i changed the radiator and the thermostat.i don't think a head is blown cause it dosen't...

OK, check that the 2 fans are turning on when it gets to operating temperature. If not, replace the 3 or so relays that control the two speed fans on your car.If that doesn't solve the problem, then you may have to buy new fan motors and also have the harness replaced if necessary to make it cool reliably.

I had this problem on a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine that overheated over 157 deg. F and went into its limp mode for cooling the engine off by allowing 1/2 of the cylinders to circulate fresh air into the engine in case all antifreeze would leak out or the car would overheat.

Don't run the Northstar engine too long, more than 45 min. at a time in this limp mode.

Good luck on this repair of your Northstar Engine.

2000 cadillac northstar running hot

I just had to rebuild my wife's Northstar. You have a bad head gasket. Her's was doing the same thing, and not showing traditional signs of head gasket problem. (IE: white smoke) It was just overheating with normal use.

Problem with overheating on 1996 Cadillac Deville with Northstar engine. The information screen read "engine overheating", "idle engine" and "change oil" all within one minute. Are these issues related...

The oil life resets to zero after the engine overheats. Check for external leaks first, make sure the water pump belt is still there and turning. The most likely cause if the car has over 70,000 miles is head gaskets.
