Changing front brake pads on a 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Can not remove the caliper to get the pads out.

Theyre actually the 10mm bolts. Also use a c-clamp if you have to. Doont forget to siphon the brake fluid out of the reservoir.

There should only be two bolts on the back of the caliper holding it into the knuckle. Removing those two bolts should free the caliper. In fact I believe they're 12 or 13 millimeter bolts.

This is usually pretty simple. Start by removing the brake drum. Sometimes the brake pads themselves prevent easy removal. There should be an adjustment hole on the back side of the backing plate. Pop the rubber plug out. Use a flat tipped screwdriver to turn the notched disc. one way will tighten and the other way will loosen it, usually both sides are different directions. Once the drum pops off you can begin replacing pads. I like to take a digital photo first, just in case... I then take each piece off one at a time and set it on the ground exactly how it went in. There is usually one big spring that holds the two shoes together, this one is tricky to release, but it's easier if you adjust that tensioner all the way in first. There will also be a couple of springs with retainers holding the pads in place. There will be a notch in the retainer, you'll have to push down and twist 90 degrees to release retainers and springs. They make a special tool, but you can use a pliers or vice grip if you're careful. Don't loose the pin or spring and retainer. Clean everything with brake cleaner and start to re-assemble.

If you are changing pads all you need to do is use a C clamp to push the piston all the way back into the caliper. It will then fit over the new pads without ever having to expose air into the lines. If you haven't added any brake fluid, then you don't take the cap off cause it can only overflow if you have added. Simplist way to do it. I found out this trick years ago and never looked back! S0 easy

I am changing my fron brakes on an Audi A3 1.8 1998 model and want to know the allen key size for the caliper?
For front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!! For front brake pads. First you must verify yours front brake disc diameter: 280 mm or 288 mm. (On my car y have 288 mm). After that you can buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow:
1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose!
2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper.
3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease).
4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier.
5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston.
6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary!
7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing.
8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward).
9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier.
10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm.
11. Install both caps.
12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!

Normally it's not too tough to change the brake pads with minimal tools. You will need a large C clamp or brake tool to compress the brake caliper piston back into the caliper. I would check the condition of the brake rotors, if you have heard some scraping.

How to change the brakes on a 1998 ford windstar?
Very easy! I owned several different year Windstars....very good van...

Changing the pads are very easy. Here is the instructions:

Removal & Installation
  1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir cap. Siphon and recycle approximately half the fluid from the reservoir.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the disc brake caliper guide pins.
It is not necessary to disconnect the hydraulic lines.
  1. Lift the disc brake caliper from the anchor plate.
  2. Position the disc brake caliper out of the way by suspending with a wire.
  3. Remove the brake pads from the anchor plate.
To install:
  1. Inspect the rotor surfaces for scoring or buildup of lining material. Minor imperfections do not require machining. Hand sand the glaze from the rotor using 150 grit aluminum oxide sand paper.
  2. Use a C-clamp and wooden block to seat the disc brake caliper hydraulic piston in its bore, as illustrated. This must be done to provide clearance for the disc brake caliper to fit over the front rotor during installation.
  3. Remove all built-up rust from the inside of the brake caliper pad contact area.
  4. Install the brake pads, with the clip on insulators, into the front brake caliper anchor plate.
  5. Install the disc brake caliper onto the anchor plate.
  6. Install the disc brake caliper guide pins and tighten to 23-38 ft. lbs. (31-38 Nm).
Failure to tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque in a star pattern may result in damage to the brake rotor.
  1. Install the wheel and tighten lug nuts to 83-112 ft. lbs. (113-153 Nm).
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Pump the brake pedal to seat the brake pads.

Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1/2 full. Discard the removed fluid.
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Front brake caliper guide pin bolts
    • Brake caliper by slowly sliding it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.
    1. If necessary, compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.
    2. Outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.
    • Inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity
    • To install:
    1. Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.
    2. If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.
    3. Install or connect the following:
      • New inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.
      • Outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly
      • Brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter
      • Caliper guide pin bolts and torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 2002–04 models or 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) on 2005 models
      • Front. Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.
    4. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road-test the vehicle.

    For the rotors:

    Brakes will drag on passenger front and I am losing brake fluid slowly
    sounds like your piston for your caliper is shot. leaking around seal onto brake pad and or ground. remove passenger tire look behind disc that is the one that will be glazed. look for wet around metal should be dry if looks like it was recently sprayed with some kinda oil its leaking. you need to replace caliper.

    2005 sebring hub bearing replacement
    This is actually not a dificult repair IF YOU TAKE YOUR TIME.
    Start, of course, by raising and supporting the vehicle
    remove the wheel(s) as needed
    Remove the caliper, brake pads and caliper mounting braket
    remove the rotor
    remove the axle nut, there may be a cotter pin in the nut acting as a lock.
    make sure the axle pushes in freely inside the hub, it's splined and sometimes seizes in, a puch and hammer will knock it free
    there will be three bolts on the rear of the hub assembly that must be removed
    remove the hub by hitting it with a hammer, sometimes the rear bearing seal stayes in place, remove this also
    reverse these steps to install your new hub.
