The BMW dealer sells a chemical that helps get rid of carbon, you let it (the engine) **** the can dry through one of the engine's smaller vacuum lines, hold the speed up as the engine will try to stall, then shut off the engine and let it sit for an hour longer if possible, then blow it out on the freeway with some spirited driving

We had this problem in a 135 and the best way to get rid of it is to clean out the intake with high pressure crushed walnut shells. Once you have it clean, have your mechanic install a catch can and that will collect all that soot and keep it out of your intake manifold.
