1 & 2 work fine- in overdrive the engine revs going to 3rd-let off gas & it shifts, but no 4th gear. Will not shift to third in drive at all. I changed the shift solenoids (both) and the VSS- still not shifting properly. No metal in the pan when I dropped it- fluid at bottom of pan was thick and sludgy.
The transmission needs replacement or to be rebuilt.

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.

It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

You most likely have a broken sunshell inside the transmission. They tend to go out when the transmission is shifted to drive when while still rolling in reverse.

Try the vacuum line to the kickdown solenoid. If its not cracked your tranny may need to be rebuilt. Flushing and filter may help also.
