The rear hatch will not lock at all. I can flip the switch inside of the hatch by removing the 5 X 5 panel and reaching my hand inside. After doing that the door will stay locked however otherwise it stays unlocked. You can hear the motor trying to lock but nothing happens. Every now and then the back glass will not pop when the handle is pulled but if you hit the glass hatch button on the remote it will open. What is the cause for the door not locking?

unfortunately, the only way I know of would be to destroy the inner panel (cheaper than a back door) and get to the lock mechanism from there. I assume you have tried just about everything else at this point.
You can easily locate a used panel in a scrap yard.

test the lead to the lock actuator see if u get voltage (u will have to chase wire back to fuse box to find short) , if u get voltage then the lock has gone bad or is binding on something.
