1999 Pontiac Sunfire stalls in hot weather and will not restart for about 5 or 10 minutes. Will continue to do this until car sits for a while.

Lived in Florida for the past eight years and this was a real problem on long trips or after driving more than 20 minutes in hot weather. Very annoying...wonder if this is something other people have had a problem with. Recently drove from FL to MA and it happened several times on the highway (in busy highway traffic). Not good! Thank heavens for AAA. Since I have been in MA it has not happened once. Any ideas?

On some of these motors the crank position sensor goes bad when it heats up I would replace that first

What was replaced in the tune up? Usually the coil paks cause these types of issues. Also fuel filter or fuel pump will allow enough fuel to start and sputter like you describe.

You could have a bad alternator and are running off the battery voltage. This is just one possibility tho.

Next time this happens, reach up and try to turn the key like you are trying to start. It shouldn't engauge starter while in gear so don't worry about that. If it starts up when you do this, you most likely have a weak switch and the weight of your keys swinging may me shutting you down.

1999 sunfire will start but stalls after a minute or so. turn key back to on position and can hear fuel pump then can start it again but only runs for a minute then stalls again

Assuming the pump relay is good, it could be the engine computer or something else. The computer needs to see oil pressure or RPM to continue to energize the pump relay. You could jumper the relay to verify.

1992 pontiac boneville, keeps stalling

Have you chg.fuel filter and had a fuel pressure test done? Does it have spark after it stalls? Fuel pumps are a common problem, they work when cold get warmed up they quit, after a while quit all together. Do the fuel pressure test.
