SOURCE: 1998 SUNFIRE GT TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

There are 3 transmissions that could be in your car,the 3 speed auto and 4 speed auto overdrive, and of course the manual 5 speed. The 3 speed is designated the 3T40,the 4 speed auto is the 4T40E trans. To check the fluid level, first, the car has to be warmed up to at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The car has to be raised in the air,as there is a steel plug in the trans case that has to be removed to check the fluid level. The plug takes an 11 mm or 7/16" socket or wrench and is located on the passenger side of the trans case, near where the passenger side axle engages into the trans. The procedure is to warm the car up to at least 100 degrees, engage the shifter into each gear selection pausing for about 5 seconds in each gear, then remove the plug.If fluid drips out,it is full.If no fluid drips out,add fluid through the top of the trans after removing the red plastic cap,and make sure to use a long funnel to avoid a mess.Add fluid until it drips out the hole. When done, replace the plug and cap.Just a note,a transmission does not "use" fluid like an engine uses oil.If you have to add fluid, that means there is a leak that needs to be repaired.Good luck

SOURCE: where do i add transmission fluid to my pontiac g6

You can add transmission fluid to you transmission through the transmission fluid dipstick tube. Take your time and use the right size funnel, check and dubble check to make sure you don not over fill. Over filling the transmission is just as bad as not haveing enough fluid too.
Good luck and hope this helps

SOURCE: where to check/put in transmission fluid in 2005 Pontiac Sunfire

I assume this is an automatic transmission, you didn't say.
There is no dip stick on the transmission any longer.
You will have to go under the car to check. You may want to go to your local instant oil change and have them check the level.
If you feel you want to check it, here is a description of the location and process.

Make certain the vehicle remains level while checking the fluid.
Located just above the top sealing flange of the transmission oil pan you will find a threaded plug. Remove the plug and see if transmission fluid drips out of the hole. If so, the fluid level is correct. If not, remove the red fill cap on top of the transmission, driver side. Add fluid to the transmission until fluid dribbles out of hole.
Replace and tighten the plug.
Good luck.

SOURCE: adding transmission fluid to 98 pontiac sunfire

There is a plug located on top of the transmission under the brake master cylinder. It is held in place by a bolt on the side of the transmission near the firewall. Remove the bolt, then remove the plug. Fill it until the fluid comes out of the hole.

How do i check and add transmission fluid to my 2000 pontiac sunfire

There is a bolt on the bottom of the transmission to remove to add/check fluid level. It must be done with the vehicle running and on a level surface (on a vehicle lift at shop). It can't be done with a floor jack because the vehicle won't be level anymore. There is a small (10mm I think) bolt on the on the side of the transmission side that faces towards the engine, just pull it out and if fluid trickles out then it is full. If not, get some dextron 3 and fill it. It's probably a good idea to just let a shop do this because there isn't an easy way for someone to fill it without the proper equipment.

How to check automatic transmission oil and how often to change fluid

To check the fluid, there is a dioscuri that GM typically puts on the driver's side nearer the back of the engine compartment. You can find it easily. It is a tube 20mm (a little less than 3/4") in dia. that comes up from the transmission. You need to have the engine running, and warmed up before you check the transmission fluid. Please note, that if it says to add, you do not add a quart. Add a Pint at a time. You should go by your manufacturer's specifications, but I flush the trans and change the trans filter about every 50000 miles, and its probably more than enough. Remember to watch loose clothing and moving engine parts while working over a running engine.

Where is the transmission dipstick on 1998 Pontiac Sunfire?

This model doesn't have a trans dipstick. To check trans fluid level there is a plug on the right side/passenger side above the transmission pan about 2 to 3 inches. The plug has an 11 or 12 mm head on it. Remove this plug while vehicle is running and at operating temperature if fluid comes out of the where the plug was then the level is adequate. To add transmission fluid there is a red or black plastic cap on top of the transmission on the driver side. You will need a transmission funnel to add to it if fluid is need.

How do I check the transmission fluid?

In an automatic transmission, the dipstick should be located around back of the engine. You let the engine run to normal operating temp. and you check the fluid level, add as needed. You add through the dipstick tube with a funnel. Hope this helps.

Cant find dip stick for tranny fluid 2004 sunfire

GM went to sealed transmissions. That car doesn't have a transmission dipstick.

There's a fill bolt that needs to be removed from the transmission while the car is on a level surface. If transmission fluid comes out, then you're at the proper level. Otherwise fill until fluid starts to come out. (Similar to what would be done on a manual transmission)

Look at the top of the transmission for a little red cap(like the oil fill cap) this is where you add fluid. If you want to check fluid condition, you need to remove cap and stick something in there and smear the fluid on a piece of paper to see color.

Hope this helps you out
