Check this procedure on F-Series...

5.4L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the transmission.
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4. Disconnect the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the nut and the starter wiring harness support bracket.
  6. Remove the nut and position the transmission oil cooler lines and bracket aside.
  7. Remove the 16 bolts and lower the oil pan onto the crossmember.
  8. Remove the 3 bolts and position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.
    NOTE Be careful when removing the oil pan gasket. It is reusable.
  9. Remove the oil pan and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
  10. Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage. If damaged, discard the oil pan gasket and the oil pan-to-oil pump gaskets. Discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
To install:
WARNING Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
  1. Inspect the oil pan. Clean the mating surface for the oil pan with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube in the oil pan and position the oil pan into the vehicle.
    WARNING Make sure to install a new O-ring seal. A missing or damaged O-ring seal can cause foam in the lubrication system, low oil pressure and severe engine damage.
    NOTE Clean and inspect the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  3. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolts.
  4. Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-oil pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  5. Tighten the oil pump screen and pickup tube-to-spacer bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
    NOTE If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  6. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block sealing surface.
    NOTE If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  7. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surface.
  8. Install the oil pan gasket and the oil pan and loosely install the 16 bolts.
  9. Tighten the bolts in 3 stages, in the sequence shown.
    Stage 1: Tighten to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.). Stage 2: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Stage 3: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
  10. Install the wire harness bracket and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  11. Position the starter wiring harness support bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  12. Connect the engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor electrical connector.
  13. Install the transmission.
  14. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil.

I just finished pulling my oilpan off my 2007 f150 4X4, so I could figure out what was wrong with the engine. Turned out that 2 rod bearing went out after 92 k. (not what I wanted to find) Anyway, I was looking at this top answer yesterday and the disassembly is not correct. You do not have to remove the transmission.
- put truck on good jack stands to make it easier to work under.
- Drain the oil
- I removed the front tires to give me more light and make it a little easier to see things.
- Remove the cross member
- disconnect the battery cable.
- remove the 3 bolts holding the differential and axels in place and lower the assembly until it bottoms out on the brackets, etc. It will not come down more than ~ 6-10 inches. I can't quite remember.
remove the transmission line bracket. (1 bolt) and pull the 2 fittings with "O" ring seals out. There is also another support bracket for the lines closer to the front which needs to be removed. (1 bolt)
- remove the starter wiring from the starter and its support bracket then you should be able to move the transmission lines and the wiring to the sides so you can get at the oil pan bolts.
- Remove the 16 oil pan bolts.
My oil pan was able to be lowered at this point and removed easily, without removing the oil strainer or doing anything further. Some of the bolts holding the differential/axels are a pain to get at, but with a ratchet/swivel, a little prying and some swearing, we got it done. Reassembly went better than I thought, but you will need 2 people and a jack to get the differential/axel assembly to line up with the bolt holes.
Hope this helps, but your first step is not to remove the transmission.

sadly I don't think there is. The oil pan is huge and sections of the frame are in the way of getting it in and out without damaging the pan severly. pulling that massive engine and replacing the pan, then putting the engine back in and reconnecting everything in 14 hours is a good estimate. sorry for the bad news

This is quite a chore, you have to lift the engine to do it:

From AutoZone...

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the water pump pulley shield.

Install engine support device to the engine lifting eyes and support the engine.

Raise and safely support the vehicle.


Remove the exhaust crossover and the exhaust retaining bracket located on the right side of the oil pan.

Remove the exhaust heat shield retaining nuts and the exhaust heat shields from the left side of the oil pan.

If you hear it knocking no bearing replacement is going to fix that long term. Its best to pull it, the crank shaft will have to be turned or polished and or replaced, weather its a rod or a maine, and posibly line boared if its a maine thats knocking. Do it right and pull it.

Whats the easiest way to remove a oil pan for a 1989 XLT F-150 Lariat
pls specified your engine size and tranmission(2WD/4WD) ............lift the vehicle and drain engine oil, remove all bolts and be carefull for removing oil pan, oil pan gasket is reusable
