When bench checked the alternator puts out 14 volts. The red wire, single wire plug that plugs into the alternator when installed on the car, does not have a current when the ignition key is turned on. The voltage light on the dash does come on when the ignition key is turned on. The single plug (Red Wire) has continuity back to where it comes out of the ECM. I can't locate the brown wire that comes from the dash light to the input side of the ECM. Are there any schematics for the ECM wireing, or inline fuses between the dash light and the ECM input plug?

check your fuel pump relay and your ignition switch those numbers you gave for voltage are not right, please recheck that you have a ground and 12volts at the pump while cranking please rate -jeff

Voltage regulator is going bad. Have alternator tested or go ahead and have it replaced. Also this would be a good time to have the battery tested. Usually an alternator that is over charging will "cook" the battery causing it to not charge, not hold a charge, to losing the gel/electrolyte solution due to boil out.

you will get some funny answers from some of these "experts " The symptoms suggest to me with out much doubt that the regulator is not doing its job correctly ,consistently.Iwould take it to an AUTO ELECTRICIAN and get it tested in situ.... there is only 4 things it can be , wireing ---battery---alternator-----regulator and of those the reg. is the only one that chops and changes. it will cost little for a sparky to check the reg ,. AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE OUTCOME

On some of the older style GM's you can take that brown wire and cut it and take the end leading from the alternator and hook it directly to the hot terminal on the alternator and just leave it hooked up and it will work. But I have ran into the occasional problem where leaving it hooked up will drain the battery when the vehicle isn't running. Hope this helps..
