Main problem: the XM radio cuts out (goes mute) during a song for a fraction of a second to 10 seconds. During this time the display is normal. AM/FM radio bands work fine. Other XM radio intermittent problems: station buttons don't work, it switches bands on its own XM to FM, sometimes the "FM Lock" message is on for a few seconds. Can XM radio do anything about the problem? If not, who trouble shoots problems like this and replaces XM modules, other than the Cadillac dealer?

wfdyer,
go buy a new radio. You can usually get free installation. If you are a do it yourselfer. Then go to crutchfields web site. They are great, they give you the adaptor plates and wire harness to go from what ever radio you get to the car, with no splicing (cutting and reconnecting of wires) They will tell you what radios will not work and tell you what ones will.
Sorry to say it but you have power to the radio, and there are really 3 things a radio needs to work. power, speakers, and a signal. you can check the antena to make sure its not broken or disconnected. but most of the times its the radio

Hello. I have driven cadillacs for years. Although it is unlikely to get two lemon radioes in a row, it sounds like this is what happened. I would recommend that you speak kindly but firmly to the dealership manager and tell him that you want another new radio. Joe

This can be a serious fault in the RF receiving stages as the signal processing being weak the AFT- auto frequency tuning- seems to HUNT around and also produce the squelch - mute activated with low signal.
This might need a signal test in the front end section and so you might help. But before you pull out the set a possible chance can also be a faulty ANTENNAE. If possible remove and check on the wores, connectors and the antennae. Try with another working one or try this in another set to confirm.
